CLEVELAND BUILDING & LOAN ASSOCIATION Wm. I,ineberger, Pres. — J. L. Sultle, Sec.-Treas. Soldiers Bonus Is Killed By Senate Body Cruihingly Defeats Bill To Pay Veteran*. No Disorder Reported. Washington. June 18 —The aol diers' bonus will not be paid this summer. Definitely, crush mg, the senate late last, night defeated the bill by which thousands upon thousands of veterans of the World war had hop ed to draw immediately almost two and a half billions In rash from the federal treasury. The tremendous margin of 62 to 18 was rolled up against the meas ure despite an amazingly day-long siege which nearly ten thousand clamorous ex-service men laid down upon America's capltol. It was evi dent that the decision turned prin cipally on the issue of safeguarding the nation's financial stability. Senator after senator gave as explanation for his adverse vote this reason, divorced entirely Iran the merits of giving eld to the vet erans. Cheer* And Boo* Heard The fateful roll cell was counted out under galleries packed solid with former soldiers. Hundreds more pressed up to the senate doors, and from the outside were plainly audible the songs, cheers and boos of thousands who swarmed over the broad plaza, blocking all traffic but, causing no disorder and voicing no threats. To make double sure that the bill would not come up again this session, its opponents resorted to strategy which is as rare In the United States senate as It is effec tive: Tabling a motion to recon sider passage. Tills extinguished the last hope of sponsors to bring the question Up later. Beaufort county farmers report the corn meal-lead arsenate mix* tura ts controlling bud warms In to bacco.
