Motherhood First—Thcti Death Av ails Convicted Woman Slayer * * * * * * Nation’s Eyes on South Carolina, Where Expectant Mother' May Go to Electric Chair After Birth of Her Babe. Cx/aTDE Snipes -■ff1"') <1 Beatrice Ferguson Snipes* Ic retribution for the act of one frenzied moment, during which *h* jumped four bullet* into the body of Constable Elliot Harris, who wa* •ruffling with her husband, Mr* Beatrice Snipe* i* in the State Peniten tiary at Columbia, S. C., awaiting execution, scheduled for April 7. The remote date wa* fixed because the young wife, already a mother, will beat another child soon. In view of the peculiar circumstance* of the ca*e, a movement i* *teadiiy growing all over the rountry with the object of securing a commutation of sentence for the condemned woman, whom the inexorable machinery of the law has condemned to suffer the paint of death almost immediately after those of motherhood. However, the protests against the severity «f the sentence are not actuated by senti ment alone. Many legalists hold the opinion that the woman was wrong fully aentenced. Inasmuch as the State failed to show premeditation they say, the verdict ought to have been one of manslaughter The facti are these: Mr*. Snipes, with her husband. Clyde Snipes, and two friend* wera stopped and »earched for liquor while driving in their auto. N«j liquor wa* found, but the officer, Constable Elliot Harris, attempted to arrest Clyde lor reckless driving A scuffle ensued, during which Mrs Snipes went to aid her mate. She was ptruck on the mouth, and, mad dened with pain and excitement, she grabbed the officer's gun and tired four shots, killing him Physicians contend that Mrs. Snipes, taking her condition into account, was not responsible for her artions at that lime But the law say* sha must die. Humanity savs “NO!" Columbia. S. C.. Dec 16.—Whil • the world is preparing to Celebrate the festive season ol 'Christmas the season that is observed in rec ognition of the greatest act of motherhood In all historya youns expectant mother is languishing in the state penitentiary here, a prey to oppming emotions, joy and grief Joy, at the prospect of bringing .1 new life into the world, and grief In the knowledge that death may part, her front her baby before It can recognize its mother. The woman is Mrs. Beatrice Snipes, who, convicted of the mur der of Policeman Elliott Harris, has been sentenced to die in the electric calr on April 7 next, about three months after she has given birth to her baby, if the sentence on Mrs. Snfpes is carried 'out. it will he the first time since the Civil war that the state of South Carolina has claimed the ul timate penalty from a woman. Furthermore, Mrs Snipes will lx the first white woman in the his tory of the state to suffer execu tion But there is a steadily growing movement making itself felt through out the, entire country in an effort to save the expectant mother front the consequences of an act commit ted in an instant of frenzy. Socta! organizations in many states are hastily banding together, prepared to tnaike the "Snipes Care" an Issue between popular opinion and the courts to rank with the celebrated Sacco and Vanzetti and Tom Mooney cases. Apart from tire .sentimental sine of the question, ly.tmv authorif r maintain that Mrs. Snipes has been wrongfully condemned Inasmuch .as j the state clearly failed to show that i the killing for which tire* woman: may pay with her life was premedi tated. In view of the complicated circumstances of the rase. It Is just ns well to give a resume of the tie tails. Mr.'. Snipes, with her husband,! Clyde Snipes, and two friends, were j stopped on the road near Columbia while riding In the family »u: -,w. > bile, and searched for liquor Elliot Harris, a rural constable, was th<> officer. Finrt'n? no liquor, Harris sltenrp'fd to nrre-'t Clyde Sn nes for- dang'tous driving, anti n ruffle endued. Snipes was knocked down p-i his wife went to itls assistance reupen she received a blow on the mouth. She then granpleci with tb» officer einnn his gun from the holster at his side. The officer, ac cording to the defense storv, at tempted to wrest the gun from the hands of the excited woman, but in the tussle the weapon was fired, the bullet striking Harris in the leg Mrs, Snlnes then frenst'-dlv fired three more sho** into the officer" bodv, killing him. . Basing the defense on * hat -storv the attorneys for Mrs. Snine- in sist that the charge shou'd have been one of manslaughter. But the prosecution proved that eight min utea elapsed from the time of tin first shot until Mrs So1 pcs fired the three that proved fatal Ttiot eig.n minutes, said the state, made all tl\c difference lie tween munshuigh ;tei‘ and first degree murder, Physicians who h»v« been ques tinned in the matter, however, of Iter the opinion that a woman hi : Mr.. Snipe-, condition .of approach ling motherhood would .still be in a i highly nervous and excited stat !after the elapse of eight minutes and. therefore, not fully n po’nsi ble for her actions. Nor, they add would she be jiormal for at. least half an hour after the first "brain storm" had seized her. That is the ease as it now stands, The state says Beatrice Snipe.-, must die. Humanity cries out she must not Meanwhile a tiny, unborn mite waits to see the dawn of his life in a prison cell and the mother-to-be cowers under the shadow of eternal night.
