County Boy Star Athlete On Two Carolina Squads Vergil Weathers Reminds Carolina Fans Of Great Cagcr* In Past. Chapel Hill.—There's a certain forward on the University of North Carolina basketball team with a very creditable habit of coming throuRh in the pinches, of produc ing his best Performances when there's most at stake, and for that reason. Tar Heel basketball fans find it hard to suppress a smile at mention of the Southern Confer ence basketball tournament The ybung man responsible for the smiles is none other, man Vergil Weathers, a .junior who claims Shel by as his home. Weathers’ play during the regu lar season last -winter was good enough to earn him a second string berth on the all-state team, but he really came into his own at the Southern Conference tournament in Atlanta. Weathers' plav in the tour' nament was a revelation in speed and accuracy of eye and served to help raise the Tar Heels from an "also entered” team in*o the big gest surprise package of the tour nament. No one. not even tho. r ardent basketball fans in Chapel Hill who wonder what’s wrong if the Tar Heels don't annex a championshw. expected Coach Bo Shepards ag gregation to do a great deal in the tourney, but the Tar Heels steppe 1 out and began to show things at the start. Tennessee was the first victim and then came Kentucky, a big favorite to win the championship. That game furnished Weathers the biggest thrill he ever received on the court. It was a real story book affair with the score see-sawing first one wav and then another w’ith neither team ever taking anv thing like a safe lead. With tes than a minute to plav Kentucky was leading 42-41 and Elmer Johnson, the Wildcats' great forward, drbhlcd into scoring pos ition near the Carolina goal. The fans thought the end had come for Carolina, but they failed to oons'd er Mr, Weathers’ son Vergil. for Verg swept in front of Johnson fri ked the ball out of his hands, dribbled the length of the court, and deposited the oval graceful' and surely in the basket Almo immediately the gup hred to end the game, the hardest one the Tat Heels had all season That plav alone was enough to cause Weathers to be picked for a first string all-Southern berth, bill he made his post certain by con tinuing his same brilliant plav against Auburn and Georgia F> was second high scorer for the four days competition with 44 points, following Strickland Georgia, who reaped 51. passed faultlessly, and p’aved a bang-up game on defense Vet-gil got his early training at Lattimore high school, near Shrl - by, where he played basketball and baseball four years, but he came to Carolina without anv all-star hon ors attached to his name and was forced to prove his ability from the ■tart. That didn't take long and h was selected for a first string p'acp on the all-state freshman team and nroce-ded to win an infield spot on the baseball club without a grear amount of trouble Last, soring hr nlayed second ba te regularly for the var itv anti was one of the teams leading hit ters. Vergil hasn't been bothered much w!th 'injuries and Coach .Separd " counting on his brilliant work, not only in thr tournament hut dn'-in* the regu'ar season, to be an im portant factor in the Tar Keels’ ef forts to regain the sunremeev th— en.ioved during the days nf Cobb and McDonald Upp*r Cleveland News Of Interest Christmas Program at .Mount Zion.
