P,f- mi rain of time and looking upon the old days of the red! brick court house on the square and the town of that era. j K I likely that a number of families have papers of around the same date preserved in their homes, yet they never fail to interest—interest tthe older folks because they bnn£ back memories, and the younger generation because sl pjvps them a basis of comparison. rjiic nf the old issues is a special hnr.,rr «jmon put- ont by The Star editor, Clyde R. Some years ago Harry owned a stripped-down auto of the collegiate type. One. week-end he decided to drive to Blowing Rock, and he did. ' It rained upon him en route and 'due to the open-ventilation type of 'car he was considerably bedraggled upon arrival. Nevertheless he strode into the Mayview Manor, then in its swankiest days and started to j register. Perhaps Harry’s rain soaked apparel gave th* hoity-toity clerk the idea that Harry might not realize just what an exclusive hotel he was stopping at. "You know.” the clerk said. "The lowest price room' we have is *12 per day.” “Mv Gosh!” came the surprised ejaculation. "What's wn-ong with your rooms that you don't get a more decent price than that? Do they leak?” Within another minute or two Harry had all the clerks and all the bellhops helping with his baggage and curtsying at every turn. It wasn't until some time later that they learned Harry wasn't quite a multi-millionaire and not accus ] tomed to stopping at cheap *12 per jday dumps. A ROMANTIC TALE Debro D. Wilkins, Shelby's new chief of police, tells this one and if you're skeptical, talk to him. We don’t talk back to police chiefs. "Years ago," Chief Wilkins said. "And just how many years ago is none of your business. Ernest Hoey and myself then about the age of 20 each, decided to go in business together. We did and we moved to Hickory to open up. One evening we were sitting on our boarding house porch when a, very attractive young lady came down the street. I had heard that she was a teacher but I did not remember the name. As she passed Ernest kept looking | at her. Finally he said to me: 'That’s the best-looking girl I ever 1 saw.' He kept watching her and a minute later said: 'I’m going to marry that girl.’ I told him that he was Just talking, that he had never seen her before and didn’t even know her name. He refused to listen at me. Some months pas sed by and I left Hickory. A few years later T ran into Ernest again, here in Shelby or somewhere, and he told me that he was married. When I met his wife imagine my surprise when she turned out to be the good-looking girl we saw go down the street that .day in Hickory. He meant what he said. And if you don't believe it's true, go ask him.” And back in The Star shop the foreman of the plant will okay the I entire story. SMART FELLOWS Some weeks ago The Star record ed the fact that young Talmage Lee, of Fallston, was the only mem ber of the graduating class at Wake Forest this year to receive a "sum ma cum laude” diploma. In fact, according to news dispatches only four graduates of the several thousand have established such a record there. And it was this week that we learned that two of the four were Cleveland boys. The olher was Forrest G. Hamrick, now of New York city, and a brother of Miss Annie Hamrick. He finished in 1902 and another member of his class attained the same honorable dis tinction. Loot Tells Story Of Negro’s Crime Charlotte. July 12.—A negro com mitted a robbery here Monday, but a short time later the loot provid ed both for the robber's escape and I its return to its owner. The loot was a radio with short - ! wave adapter. As the robber pre j seated it for sale at a radio shop he “chuned it up” to give the prospective purchaser an idea of its quality. The reception was perfect. It was the local police, broadcasting news of the robbery and description of the loot. Catching his breath, the negro 1 fled. , “Around Town’s” Mail Pouch RlTTHERFORDTON'S OLD JAILS; THIS 'N THAT. Dear Square Rounder: In the little town of Ruthenord ton. you know' where it is, don’t you? there are a couple of old jails Did you know that? Well we do. Now these old jails have made his tory—yes history. In one of these it. was that Randolph Abbott Shot well was confined by the Ruther | ford county’s tyrant. Judge Logan ; It was there that Shelby 's own J. ,B. Fortune sat begging for water | as the windlass of the well squeak led. The jailer only grinned and 'said: "Get out and git yer water." I And the Fortune boys, yep they were all in there for being members of the famous white robed K.K.K.'s decided that that was the best thing for them to do. so they had their brave and fighting mother to bring down a pie. She did and a. fork with which to eat thRt, pie Now for several reasons she cooked this fork with and in the pte. Ha, the jailer with all his smartness was outwitted by this Cherry Mountain woman who once defied Yankee soldiers to take her horse. The boys cut a hole through that old brick wall and left. But before so do ing they whtte washed the bottoms of their feet and walked upon the walls and down the hole in the wall. When Mr. Jailer came in the next morning the boys who did not care to escape said: "You see, don't you?” The jailer did see. but he. never rounded up the boys. They had plenty of friends, who did not mind helping them put up a nice -little fight. Moreover, the boys went to Texas. I At the other old Jail it was that the man was said to have hanged himself, or perhaps it was a woman, from a window. Now it is said that the print of that person's body can be seen upon the brick of the wall to this day. It can not. The man who lives in the old jail has let a protecting vine grow over the wall to keep the curious away. Before he Stopped it droves and droves kept him in misery. And they say in the town that it is all stuff any way, which we do not doubt. Do I THIS AN’ THAT This Square Rounder is well known tn the neighboring towns A few weeks ago we were In Ruth erfordfon and learned that he was as well known almost as Hon. Clyde R. One man declared that he read Rounding The Square at every op portunity. and w anted to meet the man whose likeness adornes the top section. "It's his wonderful style”, he said to us. . .And the girl who won second place in the beauty ; contest up there w ould have won first place had she worn another! color of dress, so 'tis said. . . And they claim in Rutherfordton that | they are less, the people, "stuekup" [than are Shelby and Forest City. To he. . . MOTHER, I LOVE YOU Again the Colonel gets space In this terrible pounding of the keys. Have you heard about, how he got out of working his mother’s garden in the awful heat of a mid summer day? If so. skip this. Col. Hatcher Webb was one called into the house by his mother, who informed him that her garden need ed his attention The Colonel was in a dilemma, but there is a head on his should ers. so that thing was brought Into use.
