Arrest Man Over Gatton Explosion , ..tenia Tolice Announce George Johnson 1* Held For Dyna miting: Automobile, GaMonia. July 12-Local police this week announced that they had wen notified of me arrest in Greenville, S. C.. of George W. Johnson, wanted in connection with • hr dvnamiting of an automobile in front*of the home of C. D. Brice here June 6. Johnson, they reported, was ar rested and released on bond. No t;me has been fixed for his trial In municipal court here, but it will W fixed within a few days, they taid It W8S Indicated Johnson ,vouid make no effort to resist ex tradition. The dynamiting, which demolish ed a car in front of Brice's home three blocks from the police station at l a m. June 6 shook uptown Gastonia for blocks around, shat tered windows and glass doors, and caused general consternation in many homes in the neighborhood. The Brices told police they sus peeled Johnson. It is alleged he threatened to blow the car "all to hell" when the Brices refused tax give him a mortgage on the car for a loan he is said to have advanced to finance a beauty parlor operated by Mrs. Johnson in West Gastonia. Charges A Sale Tax For Changing Money (Lincoln County News) W. H. Boring, Register of Deeds for Lincoln County, tells a fast one on the new sales tax. He says that he dropped in Paul Heafner's store | in Crouse and r.sked for change for fifty cents. Paul, genial and accom 1 moderating handed Mr. Boring 49 [nine cents and when Mr. Boring asked him why the short-changing I he replied that the one cent was | sales tax and that it applied to | anybody getting money changed. [After putting the joke over so suc cessfully on Mr. Boring Mr. Heaf ncr tossed out the additional penny together with a good laugh. Ninety farmers sold 21,109 pounds of wood in Avery county wool pool during the past week. Billy Gault, Bobby Arey and Billy Lineherger returned to their respec tive homes here on Sunday after spending last week at the Piedmont Boy Scout camp at Tryon. Mrs. Sally Phillips, who has been spending the past week in Wash ington, D. C., has returned to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Z. J. Thomp son on W.* Marion street where she is spending the summer. Miss Margaret Haynes of Cliff side is expected to arrive in Shelby j tomorrow to spend the remainder of the week visiting Miss Kathleen j Young at her home on W. Warren street. Miss Katherine Lane and Jack I Lane, Jr., of Washington, D. C., are in Shelby to spend the remainder of the summer with their grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rippy, on S. LaFayette street. McBrayer had her ton sile removed at the Shelby hospital on Monday and was able to return to her home on S. DeKalb street yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard Panther of Greenville, spent last week here with Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Panther. The former’s little daughter. Patricia Joyce, is spending the summer here with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Panther. Word has been received by friends that Rev. W. E. Pooney, presiding elder of the Mt. Airy district who formerly served for ttfree years as pastor of the Central Methodist church here, is seriously ill. Miss Rachel Wells spent last week end at Myrtle Beach with a party of friends. . Mr. and Mrs. Dennis A. Beam and little daughter. Betty, returned (home Monday night after spending several days -with Mr. and Mrs. (Lewis R. Callahan in Columbia, S. iC. Lewis Callahan.
