While Seeking Chicken Thieves,
Officers Uncover Unknown Crime
'By Chance. Catawba Officer* Ar
rest Law Breakers While Trail
ing Another Crime.
Catawba News Enterprise
How one man's complaint to
county officers led to the discovery
of another crime, leaving the for
mer crime unsolved and landing the
perpetrators of the latter in the
clutches of the law, was revealed
here Friday afternoon by Deputy
Sheriff Ray Pitts.
P. R. Propst came into town Fri
day and reported to county officers
that sometime during Thursday
night somebody had stolen between
15 and 20 chickens from his chick
en yard. Officers started an inves
tigation and went to all grocery
stores to notify the operators of the
theft and to report if any one tried
to sell them chickens.
While officers were at the F. E.
Yount grocery store, three young
boys walked into the store with
seven chickens for sale. Something
'was said about stolen chickens, and
the three boys, one still with an old
hen under his arm. took to their
heels. The officers gave chase and
^caught two of the boys, while the
(one with the hen made good his
escape.
At first the two boys gave ficti
tious names, but when their true
(identity was revealed, they confess
.
;ed that they had stolen seven
j chickens from Mrs. Ethel Fulbright
I whom officers visited. Mrs. Pul
bright, unaware of tile theft of her
fowls, made a check-up for the of
ficers and discovered that seven of
her 12 chickens had been stolen.
The boys were charged with the
theft and one was jailed and the
other released under bond, pending
a hearing as soon as possible,
j Mr. Propst, the original complain
ant, and officers were Friday night
j still searching for the person or
I persons who rellc”ed Mr. Propst of
jhis fowls.
