North Carolina’s two senators, although still as much politically opposed to Frank R. McNineh as ever, appar ently will not stage a senate fight serious enough to theater confirm ation of the Charlotte «man as chairman of the federal power com mission. Hu odds are in favor of Mc Nlnch’s confirmation with Senators Bailey and Reynolds silently ob jecting In the background when his name comes before the senate. McNinch Is considered too much in favor of President Roosevelt, and for Bailey and Reynolds to fight him to the extent of demanding on "personally obnoxious" grounds that he not be confirmed might re act against them. Bailey, who was here this week, declined to divulge what stand he will take when McNinch’s name comes up, but he made It clear he was atUl violently opposed to the man who led the anti-Smith forces to victory in North Carolina In 1938. Reynolds, shortly after President Roosevelt gave McNinch a recess re appointment last summer, issued a statement Indicating that If Presi dent Roosevelt wanted MONlnch he, Reynolds, in effect would not stand In the way. McNinch orlglnaUy was appointed a member of the power commission by President Hoover. He was ele vated to the chairmanship by Roos evelt and subsequently reappointed The Charlotte man Is considered hand-ln-hand with the President’s power policy, and he Is in exceed ingly good graces with the admin istration. OSBORNE Dep. CSC Approved by the Board of Commis sioners. Ickes Drawn In Greenwood Fight Washington, Dec. __ _ Tiir Duke Power company’s suit to en join Greenwood county, S. C., from building with PWA funds, a public ly owned power plant on Saluda river has brought the utility in fur ther conflict with Secretary Ickes. Henry T. Hunt, PWA counsel, an nounced "steps were being taken' for Ickes to become a party in re - sisting the action pending in the federal district court in South Caro lina. This meant PWA counsel will aid county attorneys in fighting the suit. ■Hie announcement came as an aftermath to the power company's protest against remarks by Icke that it was seeking “two days in court” in taking its case to federal court. The secretary referred to the lac; the Duke company had been denied a right to intervene in a suit for an injunction in the state courts oi South Carolina, and was taking its case to the district court. The South Carolina supreme court ruled it constitutional for Greenwood coun ty to use *3,848,000 in PWA funds for the Saluda project.
