Notes And News From Here And There About
Cleveland County People You Know
JOHN F. BAKE* of Lawndale
did not grow the largest bog of the
season, but grew a hog that gained
mar* weight In six months than
any other reported. On June 1st he
bought a short which he carried to
|be pan In a guano sack. There the
•boat was dumped In and told to
thrive. It did. Mr. Eaker did the
feeding and be knew how. On De
cember 14th the hog was killed and
netted 457 pounds. That was six
and a half months after he car
ried it in a guano sack. Yes, and
he made 10 to 11 gallons of lard
and 00 pounds of sausage from that

on July 7th and weighed 186 pounds
I now w elgh 206 or a gain of 20
pounds. This whole country has
been so dry tills year that crops
were almost a complete failure. No
'corn or feed crops of any amount
have been made and the cotton
1 crop almost the same shortage. This
Its one of the largest cotton grow
ing counties In the state and last
.year, up to Dec. 1st, 72.174 bales
I had been ginned and this year to
same date only 2.236 bales. The
above are the government figures
and lots of counties have not done
ias well. One part of the county
; had a good rain last July which
helped the crop In that section. The
dry weather, however, has been
very valuable to me, for my rhe
umatism Is the best shape In years,
jl feel able to work once more but
'I mean to stay at Hot Springs un
til July of next year and still get,
more benefit*.
“The Rev. R. C. Campbell, the
Baptist preacher here, has the
largest nudltorlum to preach in that
I ever saw and he usually has It
filled with people. All enjoy hls
sermons. He Is from Hollis. The
Methodist have a large church and
they got. a new preacher from the
conference a few weeks ago. He
also has enormous congregations.
The state has a school here known
as “Tech College” which has over
2,400 students. The city schools
have about 6000. But the biggest
thing we have Is football. They all
put In a lot of time at the game for
they often go from SO to 125 miles
to play a game and all the students
go to see the fun.
“This Is my sixth year to come
to Lubbock and I feel that I have
gotten more benefit this season
than ever before, but winter Is here
now and It gets too cold to stay
here during the winter. The eleva
tion of this cltv is 3 n50 feet and
the county Is level for many mites 1
It has no timber except where It j
has been planted. The soil Is 10 to!
12 feet deep and no fertilizer ts
used here at, all.
