Paper Purposed To Re Open Mill OAKFNEY, S C.. Feb. 19.~Un- ' 1 minted by the ruse of a woman' union sympathizer who unceremon-! Icusly tossed their petitions into a kitchen stove, non-union workers of the Alma mill were circulating fresh petitions calculated to bring about reopening of the plant, closed last Monday when some of the workers went on a strike. / The Alma mill is one of the five mills in the Hamrick group, of which Waite C. Hamrick, sr., of Gaffney, is president. Strikers charged the mill management with use of stretchout tactics. One of the two petitions being circulated requests the Hamricks to reopen the Alma mill:-the other is addressed to Sheriff Lake W. Stroup of Cherokee county and asks protection for non-union work ers in event the plant resumes op erations. The Alma normally employ* about 400 workers. Non-union workers claim they are in the majority, and most of these are understood to want the mill to reopen under the same working conditions that exist ed when it closed. Union workers, however, are opposed to resumption of operations under those condi tion*. They also claim to form a majority of the mill's working group. Circulation of the petitions be gan several days ago. but was halt ed abruptly when they were pre-i sented to a woman in one of the I Alma mill houses. She told the eir culators to wait a moment; that she wanted to inspect the petitions more closely. Then, she dashed back to the kitchen and consigned the papers to the stove. Circulators clsimed more than 300 names had been affixed to the petitions at the time. Doubles Springs NewsOfTheWeek Mr. ansi Mra. Way lea Waehbum Announce Birth ef Daughter. Sick Folks Improving.
