Ten black students from two county
high schools will compete in
various academic and cultural areas
Saturday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the
ACT-SO competition at Shaliotte
Middle School.
Francis Weller, news reporter and
Spectrum 6 talk show host with
WECT-TV in Wilmington, will serve
as mistress of ceremonies.
In its sixth year, the annual event
is sponsored by NAACP chapters at
Cedar Grove and Southport. ACT-SO
is the acronymn for Academic,
Cultural, Technological and Scientific
Olympics. It is designed to
discover, expose and promote
academic excellence among black
high school students.
"The premise Is that a climate
must be created in which black youth
are excited about learning," said
Coordinator I'erita Price. "It also
endeavors to create a climate where
it is as 'cool' to be academically
talented as it is to lie talented in
basketball or other spoils."
She said the winner of the county
competition will receives a $500
scholarship and an expense-paid trip
to the national ACT-SO competition,

conjunction with the convention of
the National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People.

The squad building is located on
U.S. 17 at its intersection with N.C. 87
south at Winnabow.
All plates are $3. The pork
barbecue dinner includes candied
yams, coleslaw and hushpuppics.

potato salad, green beans and
rolls.

1 was delighted to spend a day at
St. Paul, where I enjoyed the many
activities and learned that Sister McQueen,
a member of the congregation,
was hostess to Azalea Queen
Phylicia Ayers-Anderson.
St. Paul is right across the street
from the home of Wilmington's
famous Michael Jordan.

was beautifully carried out by
the Rev. Douglas Kornegay's choir
and ushers. Many of his members
were on hand to cheer on his
message, taken from St. John

Rev. Kornegay is the contact for
the famous gospel singing group, the
Revelation Gospel Singers of
Goldsboro.
Revival Continues
Revival services continue through
Friday night at Cedar Grove Baptist
Church, with Rev. .John Keel, one of
Ocean View's greatest ministers, bringing
the messages.
Recuperating Well
Michael Ray Hewett is expected to
be home in a few days. He is a patient
at the Brunswick Hospital.

Sister Uzena Bernard and her
sister-in-law, Dorothy I>ee Frink,
vacationed in Miami, Fla. April 5-13,
where they visited Sister Frink's
daughter and Ms. Juanita Wilson.

Ushers were taught by Sister Louise
Carter.

Four Brunswick County schools
will be represented Saturday at the
second annual Brunswick Town
History Bowl competition at Old
Brunswick Town beginning at 9 a.m.

Elementary, Leland Middle and
South Brunswick Middle schools will
compete for the title and a chance to
represent the county at the state
history bowl in Raleigh next month.
I.ocal students will be asked questions
concerning the role of North
Carolina during the Civil War and the
role the lower Cape Fear region
played in the war. The winning
school will receive a trophy and a >50
award to be used for publications for
the classroom. The runner-up team
will also receive a trophy.
Winners will also receive an expense
paid trip to Raleigh in May for
the state competition. All students
who participate in the county competition
will receive a certificate of

team II. At 12 noon, the final
preliminary round will match 1
Shallotte team II against Leland
team II.
Semi-final matches will begin at 1
p.m. while the championship match
will be held at 3 p.m. Prizes and
trophies will be awarded at 4 p.m.
The program is free and is open to
the public. Brunswick Town is
located on N.C. 133 between Wilmington
and Southport, adjacent to Orton
Plantation and gardens. Hours
are 9 a m. to 5 p.m. Monday through
Saturday and from i p.m. io 5 p.m. on
Sundays.
