f) Page 8-A?THE BRUNSWICK BEACH Ten Comp Scholarshif Ten black students from two county high schools will compete in various academic and cultural areas Saturday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the ACT-SO competition at Shaliotte Middle School. Francis Weller, news reporter and Spectrum 6 talk show host with WECT-TV in Wilmington, will serve as mistress of ceremonies. In its sixth year, the annual event is sponsored by NAACP chapters at Cedar Grove and Southport. ACT-SO is the acronymn for Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics. It is designed to discover, expose and promote academic excellence among black high school students. "The premise Is that a climate must be created in which black youth are excited about learning," said Coordinator I'erita Price. "It also endeavors to create a climate where it is as 'cool' to be academically talented as it is to lie talented in basketball or other spoils." She said the winner of the county competition will receives a $500 scholarship and an expense-paid trip to the national ACT-SO competition, to l>c be Id in June in Dsllss, Texss in conjunction with the convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
