Six Brunswick Technical College
students have been awarded Community
College scholarships for
school year 1985-86. They are Jessica
Caison of Supply and Gloria Cliff of
Winnabow, both enrolled in the
General Education program; Donald
Gober of Supply, Business Computer
Programming: Curtis Jackson,
I.eland, Automotive Mechanics;
Gracie Johnson, Supply,
Cosmetology; and Gregory L. Randolph,
Bolivia, in the Nurse Assistant
program.
Established in September, 1984, the
program provides 500 scholarships to
qualified students enrolled in the 58
institutions that comprise the
system. The purpose of the program
is to make educational funds
available to those who have been hit
hardest by the rising costs of education.

McNeill Graduates
Airman James K. McNeill Jr. has
graduated from the U.S. Air Force
aircraft maintenance course at Sheppard
Air Force Base, Texas.
He will serve with the 360th
Organizational Maintenance
Squadron at Pope Air Force Base,
N.C.
McNeill, a 1984 graduate of South
Brunswick High School, is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. James K. McNeill Sr. of
1-ong Beach.

Five Recei
Five Brunswick County women are
participating in the first leadership
development program for rural
minority women to be sponsored by
the North Carolina Agricultural Extension
Service.
The five attended a July 25-26
workshop in Raleigh. They are l^ena
Mae Butler, Shallotte; Patricia Ann
Cobb, Airport Road, Shallotte;
Patricia Stevenson, Longwood;
Regina E. White, Stuart Street,
Southport; and Velma L. Williams,
Route 1, Winnabow.
Program Director Brenda Foster
Allen said the program will help
black and Indian women ages 20 to 40
to develop their leadership skills by
participating in a three-year program.
The five are already leaders in
their own communities, but said they
nutuvu vu inijn uve uieir stuns in
order to help others develop their individual
skills.
Mrs. Butler, a county coordinator
for SENCland Community Action,
also works with young people in Boy
Scouts, 4-H and Little league and is a
school an^ hospital volunteer. She
has an associate degree in
secretarial science.
Mrs. Cobb holds an associate
degree and nursing certificate in
pediatrics and is a teaching assistant.
She is a 4-H club leader, Sunday
School teacher, and secretary of the
county Democratic Party organization.
In addition to 4-H work, Mrs.
Stevenson also is a parent volunteer
at Waccamaw School, active in her
church, a housing representative
with the NAACP and on the housing
development committee with the
county agricultural department. She
is a housing coordinator with
SENCland.
She wants to improve her ability to
help guide youngsters into a
"positive future," she said. "I'd also
like to use this training to help my
neighborhood club learn to prepare
grants for our impoverished
members."
Ms. White is active in the NAACP,
the Brunswick County Citizens
Association, her church and the N.C.
Association of County Clerks. She

Members of the Bolivia Extension
Homemakers Club compared their
personal diets with the four basic
food groups at their July meeting.
Clubmember Dorothy Hankins, a
retired home economics teacher,
presented the program. She had
members compare what they had
eaten that day with the "daily food
guide," or the four basic food groups,
to see if their diet included foods
from each group. She stressed the
importance of this balance, as well as
listing daily diet sources of Vitamin
C. She also discussed meat
substitutes.
Other participants in the meeting
include Mrs. l-ucestcr Mosley, president;
Mrs. Betty Brown, devotional;
with an array of healthy snacks provided
by Mrs. Hankins.
Attending the meeting at the public
assembly building, Brunswick County
Government Center, were
members Mr. and Mrs. Ed Moseley,
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert J. Bryant,
Mrs. Elizabeth Williams (with her

Mrs. Williams is active in
numerous civic groups and is a board
member or officer of the Brunswick
County Schools Advisory Committee,
the NAACP ACT-SO Scholarship Program,
the Brunswick County Human
Relations Commission, the
Brunswick County NAACP, Women
in Networking and the Council on the
Status of Women. She is active in her
church, has worked on voter
registration and is a member of the
Democratic Women. She has been
recognized for her volunteer services
by the county board of education,
human relations commission. Head

aide and a student at Brunswick
Technical College.
