Small Businesses Get Praise, Plaques
Fifteen awards were presented
Monday night as Brunswick
Technical College Small Business
Center and local chambers of com
merce recognized the role of small
businesses in the development of
Brunswick County.
Awards were presented in five
classifications following a dinner at
Sea Trail Golf Links Gubhouse, to
which representatives of all 27
nominated businesses were invited.
The event was staged during the
national observance of Small
Business Week, May 10-16.
Dr. Joseph Carter, president cf
Brunswick Technical College,
presented three awards for com
munity service to Doug Ledgett,
attorney-at-law, Southport; Alan
Holden Realty, Holden Beach; and
the State Port Pilot, a Southport
newspaper.
Alan Holden, president of the South
Brunswick Islands Chamber of Com
merce. presented awards to wiiuiers
in two classifications.
Winners in persotuiel practices
were Leland Insurance Agency,
Kid’s Connection, and Joe Sc Moe’s
Auto Service, both of Shallotte.
Awards for innovation went to
Yaupoc Beach Fishing Pier, XLai'
Construction Co. of StsalkCe, and
WJ\"W Radio of Scuthpert.
Ronald Shannon, president of the
Southport/Oak Island Chamber of
Commerce, presented awards in the
other two classifications.
Winning awards for aesthetic ap
pearance were Nice ’n Pretty and
Driftwood Shell Shop, both of

Marketing and pasnotion awards
went to Brurswick Farm Supply of
•Ash. and The Brunswick Beacon and
Brick Landing Plantation, both of
Shallotte.
Winners were decided by the
SCORE (Service Corps of Retired
Ehcecutives) chapter of Wilmington,

Friday Is Crop Report Deadline
May 15 is the deadline for filing
reports on small grain crops, accor
ding to Alfred Willetts of the
Brunswick County Agricultural
Stabilization and Conservation Ser
vice in Bolivia.
The final date for reporting on spr
ing seeded crops, such as com, tobac
co and peanuts, is June 15. Summer
.seeded crops, incliiding groin
sorghum and soybeans, must be
reported by August 1.
Farm combinations must have
been requested prior to the normal
planting dates for the crop, so com
binations will no longer be accepted
for farms with tobacco, except in
unusual circumstances.
The final date for a tobacco sale to
be effective for 1987 is June 15.

Tobacco Co-op
Meet Scheduled
Congrcasional leaders are ex
pected to highlight the program when
the Flue-C’ured Tobacco Cooperative
Stabilization Corp. holds its member
ship meeting, from 10 a.m. till noon.
May 29 in the Kerr Scott pavilion on
the N.C. State Fairgrounds.
Billy Hill, president, said Sen.
Robert J. Dole, senate majority
leader, will address the session, and
Sen. Jesse Helms, (R-NC), Sen.
Terry Sanford (D-NC), and Con
gressman Charlie Rose (D-NC) will
also appear.
This 41st annual meeting will give
growers a first-hand view of
tobacco’s future.
A complimentary barbecue lun
cheon will be served following the
meeting.

Program Features
Small Grain Crops
Those interested in growing wheat,
barley, rye and oats will get a review
of current technology and preview of
future developments at the annual
Small-Grain Field Day May 19 at the
Tidewater research station near
Plymouth.
Billy Barrow, Brunswick County
agricultural extension agent, said the
program, beginning at 4:30 p.m., will
feature subjects related to plant
breeding, plant pathology and en-
tymology.
The Tidewater research station is
located six miles east of Plymouth on
Hwy. 64. For additional information,
