BY TERRY POPE South Brunswick High School's 189 graduates gave fellow senior Darlene Harris a standing ovation. Ms. Harris sang the seniors' theme song, "That's What Friends Are For,” as a final tribute to the class of 1987. Man)’ of those standing and ap plauding her had tears in their eyes. “You are taking part in a long standing tradition,” James Forstner, Brunswick County Board of Educa tion chairman, told the graduating class. “This ceremony is called a commencement, which means a beginning. “If you take one thing with you from this school, take with you your ability to learn,” he continued. South Brunswick's graduating class was led by salutatorian Amy Coggins, who gave the welcome ad dress, ard valedictorian Deborah FonnyDuval, who gave the farewell address. Coggins tlianked the teachers and parents who have made an Impact on the seniors' lives. “Their never-ending love kept us strong,” Coggins said. “Through these people in our lives we have reached success. One taught us how to live and the other how to make a living.” School Superintendent Gene Yar brough awarded eight graduates with Presidential Academic Fitness Awards. Receiving awards were Amy Coggins, John Dosher Jr., Deborah FormyDuval, Arris Golden, Victor Lee, John Matthews, Stephen Russell III and Heather Smyla. Middle School Holds Commencement Perspiration sparkled on the faces of graduates and their families last Thursday evening at Shallotte Mid dle School as approximately 230 students marked the eight-year milestone of their public education. The 5 p.m. commencement pro gram was held in the school's gym nasium. The eighth grader students, typically clad in dress shirts and ties or lacey dresses, received their cer tificates of promotion class by class. Five students were recognized for their specific achievements during the year. Eighth-grader Perry Culpepper received the James Gary Poulos II Memorial Award, given by Gary and rrish Poulos in memory of their son, who died in March 1981. It is presented to a student who exhibits Christian views and attitudes, par ticipates in extracurricular affairs, displays friendliness and respect fulness toward classmates and teachers and maintains at least a C average. Culpepper also received the Woodmen of the World Award for American History and the Algebra I award. Chris Byrd received an Algebra I award also, while Jennifer Russ won the Language Arts award and Monika Hewett the DAR Citizenship Award. Seventh-grader Jeremy Hewett received the computer pro gramming award. Along with brief remarks by Prin cipal Mark Owens, the audience heard devotions by Heather Hard wick, a welcome by Phillip Rhodes and a farewell by Michelle Johnson. Owens also recognized Leroy Sim mons for eight years of perfect atten dance. Junior marshals for the occasion included Kim Baxley, LaTonya Bellamy, Fhun Detrie, Bridgett Hill, J Hugg, Heather Hughes, Tikila Morgan, Wanda Morgan, Jennifer Richardson, Ben Robinson and Meg Small. Firemen's Annual Meeting Scheduled The annual meeting of the Sunset Harbor and Zion Hill volunteer fire department will be held at 1 p.m. June 27 on Sunset Harbor Road. Renee Harrison, senior class presideht, gave the ir>- vocation. In her farewell address, For- myDuval reminded the seniors to set goals and to never give up, like Walt Disney, who she said went broke seven Umes before he reached suc cess. “With closed minds, we don't ac complish an>'thing,” she said.
