On BTC Board
Are Clarified
Filling of two seats Uiis month on
the Brunswick Technical College
Board of Trustees would not shift tire
overall political party alignment of
the board as indicated in a June 18
news story.
At their June 15 meeting, county
conunissioners rcliashed, but did not
change, an earlier decision to allow
District 4 Commissioner Frankie
Kabon to name the county's ap
pointee. Rabon Imd asked for tire
privilege, citing a lack of District 4
membership on the board of trustees.
However, two commissioners then
challenged that. Based on the county
board’s rotation system. Commis
sioners Jim Poole and Chris Chappell
argued the appointment rigidly
belonged to Di.strict 1, Chappell.
Uabon later called in his appoint
ment of Charles “Chuck" l-anier of
the Mill Creek area, who like him, is
registered as a Republican.
The man he replaces on the board
in July will be W.A. "Bill” Stanley
Jr., a former chairman of the board
who was recently elected chairman
of the Brunswick County Democratic
Party. A resident of District 2, he was
appointed to the trustees’ board when
such appointments were made by
township rather than electoral
district.

McDonald's Opens With Giveaway
Stanley had indicated earlier timt
Lanier's appointment, combined
with the anticipated appointment by
Gov. Jim Martin of a Republican to
replace Rep. E. David Redwine as
trustee, would shift the political ma
jority on tile college board from
Republican to Democrat since the
chairman (a Democrat) votes only to
break a tie.
Fred Walker, extreme left, helps cut a rihbon of dollar
bills to open his second Bninsvdck County McDonald’s
restaurant in Shallotte last week. The owner/manager
was assisted hy, from left, store manager Bruce
Boyce, Mayor Jerry Jones, Shallotte Fire Chief Mike
Arnold, and Walker’s wife. Sherry. The 100 bills were
divided between the West Brunswick High School
band, that played for the opening, and the Shallotte
Volunteer Fire Department Walker told the assembl
ed crowd that the first McDonald’s opened In 1955, and
the franchise Is nearing its 10,000th restaurant
Walker’s other county McDonald’s is in Southport
Walker said Ronald McDonald wiU appear at the
Shallotte site from noon till 3 p.m. 'Thursday, June 27.
Late Registration Concludes June 30
A follow-up check of files of the
Brunswick County Board of Elec
tions indicates that is not the case.
The new appointments would bring
the GOP affiliates to five, not six, of
the 12 members.
Registered as Republicans arc Kel
ly Holden, Eugene Hewett and Lewis
Stanley, and I^anier. Registered as
Democrats are Jim Rabon, Chair
man David Kelly, Diirwood Clark,
Clarkle Munn, Cynthia Henry, W.A.
Stanley Jr., Cora Greene, Commis
sioner Benny Ludlum and Redwine.
Privately, if not publicly, several
trustees have criticized statements
made to area media they feel suggest
the college board’s deliberations
have been motivated by partisan
politics in the past or would be in the
future, a portrayal they said is inac
curate.
