Jo I -’.v BY TERRY POPE The final verdict Saturday had a group of local at torneys sweating out of their shirts. TTie setting wasn’t inside a courtroom. The case was decided at the Smithvilie Township District Park in Southport, site of the first annual “Clash Of The Titans’’ competition. Brunswick County’s mini-version of “Battle of the Network Stars” placed local lawyers against law eiv forcemeat officials in a test of strength, endurance and heat resistance. Temperatures on the playing field Satur day neared the 90 degree mark. The attorneys, heavily "outweighed” in the tug-of- war and car push competition, used their speed to cap ture first place in six of eight categories. They took home all of the trophies. Attorney Robert Serra received a trophy for recor ding the fastest time in the lOO-yard dash. Attorney BUI Fairley won a trophy for having the fastest time in the one-mile run. Assistant District Attorney Napoleon "Poli” Barefoot and attorney David WaU were also on the team. The lawyers won first in the obstacle course, the one- mlle run, the lOO-yard dash, volleyball, basketImU (cap tured by Poll Barefoot’s shooting) and relay run. There were no counter-arguments presented, but participants vowed revenge at next year’s event The Brunswick County Sheriffs Department won the tug-of-war competition and employees of the Brunswick County probation office won the car push event Five teams entered the first "C^sh of the Titans” track and field competition, organized by State Trooper Jerry Dove. Athietes from the highway patrol, the sheriffs department the Long Beach Police Department the pro bation office and local attorneys competed. The individual events and the teams’ order of finish were as follows: •Obstacle course—lawyers, patrol. Long Beach, sheriffs, probation; •One-mile run—lawyers, probation, patrol, sheriffs. Long Beach; •lOO-yard dash—lawyers, sheriffs. Long Beach, patrot probation; •VoUeybaU—lawyers. Long Beaph, patrol, probation, sheriffs; •Basketball—lawyers, patrot probation, sheriffs. Long Beach; •Tug-of-war—sheriff’s. Long Beach, patrot lawyers, probation; •Relay race—lawyers, patrol. Long Beach, proba tion; sheriffs; and •Car push—probation, sheriffs. Long Beach, patrot lawyers.
