It would also have 20 rest home beds. Based on a survey of agencies regarding community health care needs, the center also is proposing several special services. These in clude a specially-staffed unit for Alzheimer’s disease patients and a 24-bed adult day care program where the elderly or handicapped could be served six to eight hours daily. Some transportation services may also be offered. While local public hearings would be held in the affected counties, Ben nett said he expected the application to be reviewed only by the Certificate of Need division of the N.C. Depart ment of Human Resources, not the board of the Cardinal Health Systems Agency. With federal funding cut backs, he suggested, the state’s health system agencies are cutting back their roles in the review and certification process and concen trating on planning. Currently the county has one nurs ing home in Southport. Ocean Trail Convalescent Center, with another 100-bcd facility under construction by Autumn Care Corp. in ShaUotte.
