However, it was only 11 minutes earlier that West Brunswick, cling ing to a 21-20 lead, was fighting for its life as the pesky Haiders were deter mined to rain on the Trojans' opening parade. Reality set in moments later as West Brunswick opened a .scoring marathon and the I'roiaas' 31-point fourth quarter and an eventual rout was lieginning to take shape. ' The offensive line really took con trol of the game and did a tremen dous job. The Trojans went on to win. 55-26. their first season-opening triumph in seven vears. "I was disappointed in our defense, especially in the .secondary. Orrum e.vposed some secondary problems that we were concerned with prior to the game. We have three new starters in the secondary as well as both new defensive ends that all lack experience. But. we do have full con fidence that they will improve." Ihe win snapped a .seven-year, season-opening jinx for West Brunswick as the Trojans had not won their first game of the year since 1980. I'he I rojaiis not only won their opening game that sea.son but went on to capture the Three Rivers 3-A (onference championship and ad vance to the .state playoffs (the la.st time either event occurred. i West Brunswick .scored on its first three po.ssessions of the first half and, with the exception of its opening possession of the third quarter, scored on every drive of the second naif. .Senior tailback Ronald l.ance became the leading rusher in the state this sea.son after one week with 316 yards on 28 carries. Included were touchdown runs of four, five, two and 1,5-vards. The Trojan defense set up West Brunswick s first .score after Orrum fumbled on its opening possession. Trojan defensive lineman Craig Fogle recovered quarterback Fred die Ellis' fumble near midfield with S: IS to play in the opening quarter. West Brunswick then drove 11 yards in nine plays with 1-ance scor ing from the four yard line with 3; 12 left, rravis .Snead kicked the first of seven straight extra points to give West Brunswick a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Raymond Howard sparked the Trojans on their next possession completing three passes in the scoring drive including a 11-yard tass to Gary Gore and a 21-yard strike to Tony Graham on a key fourth down situation. l.ancc scored following the pa.ss to firaham on a five-yard scamper. Ellis con nected with running back Cleveland Rogers for a '23-yard touchdown pa.ss. Rogers added the extra piint 1:39 left. A three-play scoring drive by the Trojans followed with l,ance carry ing a!! the way and getting his second and touchdown on a two-yard run with 3;.16 to play. Snead kicked the extra point for a 21-7 West Bruaswick lead. Ellis continued to burn the Trojan secondary on Orrum's next drive. The junior quarterback completed a 30-yard to.ss to Timmy Britt and three plays later connected with William Campbell for a 31-yard scor ing strike. Rogers followed with his second ex tra point and the Raiders clo.sed to 21-11 at the half. The Trojans managed just one opening possession in the third quarter as Orrum took control with 8:51 to play and kept the ball until the final 18 seconds of thi? period. The Raiders drove 57 yards in 16 plays behind the running of Thomas .Smith and Rogers. Rogers scored on a 10-yard drive up the middle for the touchdown to pull Orrum to within 21-20 of the 'Trojans. 'The two-point conversion pa.ss was deflected hy I«ince and the 'Trojans mainUiined the lead. 'Two plays later, Ixince broke loo.se for a 15-yard touchdown run, his final .score of the night, with 11:27 to play in the game. .Snead added the extra point for a 28-20 West Brunswick lead. Graham made the first of Orrum's next posse.ssion and the 'Tro jans quickly turned the miscue into a touchdown. On the 'Trojans’ second play, Bryant scored once more on a T2-yard touchdown run and Snead's extra point conversion gave West Brunswick a 19-20 advantage. 'The Haiders managed one more score on the next play—a 79-yard bomb from Ellis to flanker Dwight Thompson with 2:10 remaining. The two-point conversion failed and Or rum trailed 19-26. West Brunswick managed one more score with less than a minute remaining. Following Orrum’s onsidc kick, the Trojans drove 50 yards in four plays with Howard connecting with flanker Randy Daniels for a 27-yard touchdown completion. "We entered tonight’s game think ing the defense was ahead of the of fense," added Seay. Closing in for the Trojans is Corey Hankins (right). Orrum quarterback Freddie Ellis finished the game leading the Raiders with 9-for-16 passing for 232 yards and three touchdowns. "The only offensive disappoint ment was our number of penalties. This is an area we are going to have to really work on,” said Seay on the 'Trojans’ 120 yards in penalties. Several West Brunswick offensive linemen drew praise from 'Trojan a.ssistant coach Paul Pendleton. "Right tackle Jeff Ru.ss and right guard Charlie Eaton really hustled as did the entire line paving the way for a super offensive performance.” The 55-point production by the 'Tro jans was the second-highest total in school history. Behind l.ance’s 316-yard perfor mance was Bryant with 61 yards and two touchdowas on two carries. Corey Hankins ran for 16 yards on two carries and Bas.sy Clemmons ad ded an 11-yard carry. Clemmons led the Trojan defense as well with nine tackles. Graham had eight tackles plus a pair of pass interceptions. Ellis led Orrum completing nine of 16 passes for 2.'12 yards and three touchdowns. .Smith was the Raiders' leading rusher with 25 yards wliile making two pass receptions for 35 yards.
