Coastal Fishing Regulations For Sportsmen North Carolina’s coastal fistiing regulations can be confusing io sport smen because they are not familiar with commercial fishing termin ology. or with the existence of many of the regulations. If you are ever in doubt about any t\’pe of coastal fishing, contact one of the Marine Fisheries Law Enforcement Of ficers. These state regulations cover internal coastal waters and the ocean to three miles offshore. Fishermen must be aware of federal finfish regulations in the open ocean. FISH Is there a season on marine fin- fish? No. Open all the time for hook and line. Size and number limits on marine finfish? No regulations except on striped bass, channel bass and flounder. Striped bass (rockfish) minimum is 14 inches in internal coastal waters, except joint waters where limit is 16 inches. Ocean is closed to striped bass fishing. Creel limit for striped bass in internal, coastal and joint waters is three fish per day. Channel bass (red drum, puppy drum) minimum of 14 inches, only two per day in possession larger than 32 in ches. Flounder minimum of 11 in ches. Unlawful to mutilate channel bass, striped bass or flounder to where iengin caiiiiut be deterniineu prior to landing. License required for hook and line enlt vater fichinp? None, unless fish are sold. However, a few areas of brackish (joint) waters require a freshwater fishing license. Check freshwater fishing requirements. License to gig (spear) flounder? Only if fish are to be sold. License required to use nets? A license is required if a boat is us ed or fish are to be sold. Hand seines less than 12 feet in length are exempt, unless fish are sold. License to catch minnows for bait? No license needed, unless hand seine is more than 12 feet in length. What size mesh can be used in nets? Regulations vary in different areas. Check with local officer. How long can net be? Regulations vary in different areas. Check with local officer. Is a gill net supposed to be buoyed? See buoy poster. Where can nets not be set? Can I sell finfish? There could be license re quirements. Check with local officer. OYSTER When is oyster season open? Usually opens in October and closes the last of March. Be sure to cheek exact dates each year. Open sunrise to sunset. What areas are closed to oyster- ing? Some management areas can be closed. Some areas are closed because of pollution. Yellow-green signs are posted as a reminder, but are often tom down by violators. If in doubt, contact local officer. License required to gather oysters? One bushel per person per day can be taken without any license, not to exceed two bushels per vessel per day no matter how many people aboard. More than one bushel per person requires a shellfish license, plus a vessel license if a boat is used in any way. Size limit on oysters? llUllliiiuaia Can I sell oysters? A dealer license is required in all cases except when you sell to a licensed oyster dealer. CI^M When is clam season open? Year-round sunrise to sunset. What areas are closed to clam ming? Areas closed because of pollution are marked with yellow-green signs. Signs are posted as a reminder, but are often tom down by violators. If in doubt, contact local officer. Some management areas can be clo.sed. License required to gather clams? One hundred clams per person per day can be taken without any license, not to exceed 200 clams per vessel per day no matter how many people aboard. More than 100 clams re quires a shellfish license, plus a vessel license if a boat is used in any way. Size limit on clams? One (1) inch thickness minimum size. SHRIMP When is shrimp season open? No fixed dates. Closed on Sundays (one hour after sunset Saturday to one hour before sunset Sunday). Check with local officer. Where can shrimp be taken? Check notices at local commercial fish houses, coastal news media, and other businesses where fishermen gather. Seme areas a^p never open (nursery areas). Some areas rarely close. Some areas open and close and open again. Check with local officer. How many shrimp can I take? Size? No limit on number or sizes. What is size limit of any net used for shrimping? Must be 1^ inch stretched mesh, except hand seine; channel, butterfly or float net must be IV4 inch. No inner or outer net liner of any size may be used. Can I take shrimp during closed season for bait? You can take shrimp from closed areas with a cast net but no more than 100 shrimp per day for any pur pose. Can I sell shrimp? A dealer license may be required. Check with local officer. License required to catch shrimp? A vessel license is required if a boat is used in any way. CRAB When is crab season open?
