September-October. 1987 Fall Fishing Tournaments Focus On Mackerel Two bif* dates on the fisherman’s calendar each fall are Sept. 17 and Oct. 7. for those are opening days for king mackerel tournaments in VVrightsville Beach and the i Held Sept. 17-20, thus is a major king mackerel event on the South Atlantic coast, and more than 500 boats are expected in the 1987 com- Hiver, S.C. area, re.spectively. The Wrightsville Beach tourna ment, yielding 117 prizes totalling $150,000, is returning this year to a single species format. Whereas, last year there was a category for amber- jack. only kings will be included this time. At the .same time the winners list is oeing expanded for the number of kings eligible for prize money. Registration fee is $175 per boat through Aug. 31, after which it will be $225. A $50,000 cash prize goes to the first king that breaks the state record of 79 pounds. The biggest overall king is worth $12,500, with second place worth SIO.OOO, and third, $6,000. Daily prizes are $3,000 for the big gest. $2,500, second, and $2,000, third. Most pounds overall gets $3,000, and most pounds each day is $1,000. Pre-registration and captain's meeting is Sept. 17, followed by two fishing days. The awards ceremony is at 1 p.m. on Sept. 20.
