THI BRUNSWICK BIACCN THE BRUNSWICK BEACON, Thursday, September 3, 1987—Page 9-A filed an application with the Federal Avaiation Administration asking for expansion at the county airport. Airport Commission Chairman Dr. Richard Conrad said this expansion includes modernization of the com munications radio system, replace ment of the 18-foot wind sock with a 36-foot wind sock and immediate im- mprovements to the ramp and park ing lot lighting. Conrad said the state funds are “already in hand” to complete this work and the commission is looking for bigger things in the near future. Conrad said long-range plaas of the commission include the acquisition of land for a northeast taxiway, con struction of a southwest taxiway, in creased parking facilities and com plete ramp lighting. He also said the airport wants to improve its lighting system for ap proaching planes. Currently, the airport cannot land anything with a ceiling of less than 525 feet. Conrad said the commission would like to invest in a modern ap proach system which would lower the ceiling to about 300 feet. “With the airport located where it is, somewhat near the ocean, we tend to get some overcast nights and can’t land the planes. This other system would be especially beneficial for this airport because of the weather,” said Conrad. Matthews said the original master plan for the county airport called for the eventual extension of the runway to 5,000 feet, which he said is the nor mal length for a runway accom modating business jets. Conrad said the runway is already 4,000 feet long and can now land all but the largest size of business jets. He said the extra 1,000 feet of run way was not planned to be con structed until the year 2000, but it could come sooner if people in the area certify that they are going to get substantial jet use out of the full- length strip. Conrad said the airport would most likely have to acquire more land to allow for a clear approach for the larger jets to the runway if the full airstrip ever materializes.
