A California couple's vacation was
interrupted and traffic on U.S. 17
temporarily blocked following an
unusual accident Friday afternoon.
Neither of the two persons was
seriously injured, according to the
N.C. Highway Patrol.
Theodore Patrick Croasdell, (>7. his
wife. Lillian, of Carlsbad, Calif., and
their German shepherd, Sheba. were
traveling south on U.S. 17 between
Grissettown and Thomasboro when
an "unknown vehicle" sped part i
their 1987 Chevy Suburban and the
Aitsueaiu camper n was lowing,
then suddenly slowed down in front of
them.
"When Croasdell braked to avoid
the car." said Trooner TW GonlrW
"his vehicle started swaying. He got
around the car, then lost control,
overturning on the right side."
The car that had stopped in iront of
Croasdell's vehicle made a U-turn
and fled the scene, northbound.
No charges could be brought
against the driver, who Caulder's
report indicates had exceeded the

The four-wheel-drive vehicle and
camper were crosswise both lanes of
U.S. 17. blocking traffic for several
miles north and south until the
vehicles couid be uprighted. Traffic
was rerouted temporarily onto N.C.
004 and the 'I'homasboro and Pea
landing roads by Brunswick County
Sheriff's deputies, indicated
Emergency Management Coordinator
Cecil l.ogan.
Trooper Caulder said of Croasdell,
"He's tea! lucky. 1! it naci overturned
when he hit the brakes the first time
it would have been different."
Also, the trooper added, both of the
Croasdells were wearing seat belts, a
factor in the lack of injuries. Mrs.
Croasdell was transported to
Brunswick Hospital with a complaint

Saturday 4.3 miles south of Bolivia.
Ricky lane Hayes. 27, of Supplywas
northbound with a load of dirt ,
when the wheels ran slightly off the
road onto the northbound shoulder,
causing the Division of Highways
truck to travel out of control. Hayes
drove back onto the road, cross the
center line into southbound lane,
back into the northbound lane and off
the roadway onto the shoulder, then
back onto the roadway, where the
truck rolled over on its right side. ,

cle. It ran off the right side of thi
road and turned over on its top.
Grissett was charged with drivinf

Jones, who investigated the 1:05 a.m
accident.
Injured was James Pugh, 22, alsi

ocaine to undercover agents.
