Folklore
Much has been written about foreign
wedding customs, and today many
brides and grooms are incorporating
ethnic elements into their ceremonies
or receptions. Hut in the spirit of equal
time, here arc some early American
customs worth knowing.
The bride's blanket is a custom that
originated in the South in the I9lhcentury.
Originally, a bride-to-be
would bring a blanket from her home
to the groom's; sleeping together under
it made the mainage official. I ater
versions provided a special blanket
worn around the shoulders ot the bride
and groom at the wedding reception, or
embroidered with the couple's name
and date and presented as a wedding
