ShaHott H? UUUU HUITER Following a 3ft-!tuur executive session last weak, Shallotte Aldermen instructed the personnel committee to work with Police Chief Don Stovall to resolve a problem in that department. Both Stovall and Mayor Jerry Jones refused to specify what problem or problems exist within the police department. However, Stovall said, "It's nothine bad. It's incf cnmoitiinn ? j have to work out." The town board's personnel committee consists of Aldermen David Gause and Sarah Tripp. Crossovers Approved Also last week, aldermen discussed for nearly one hour possible locations tor water and sewer line crossovers along the U.S. 17 bypass. Following the recommendation of Water Supervisor Albert Hughes, the town board decided to request that crossovers at Smith Avenue and Forest Drive be included in state TVTT A At uu i Luiiuacto. nuuiuci ciUoauvci will also be included at N.C. 130. According to estimates from state Department of Transportation engineers, Hughes said the crossover at Smith Avenue would cost the town about $5,760. Iron casings at N.C. 130 and Forest Drive would be funded by the state, he said, unless the town I decides to cover the cost of larger casings at those locations. During the discussion, aldermen also considered adding at least one crossover south of town and one I ( Wll P CHUI % I r hi ~<wKg ' >*5 . i ~m B m'~m rosiiOi' > \bu'vc some oilier 1: something li So mi VCfedc lx the most/ Anil f (=> d rommittc W VrVI II 1 I av north of town to provide easier water and sewer access for future development in those directions. Anticipating future growth in areas surrounding the bypass, Alderman Jody Simmons and Mayor Pro Tern Paul Wayne Reaves favored requesting additional crossovers. According to Simmons, the town will not attract growth and development if it cannot provide adequate water and sewer services. He said a relatively small investment by the town at this time could pay big dividends later. He added that the town's recently updated land use plan, which is the primary planning tool for Shallotte, anticipates development both north and south of town. Reaves, who also serves on the town planning board, said members of that board anticipate widespread development in areas which are currently outside of town once the bypass is completed. He also noted that additional crossovers would benefit the wastewater treatment system by maintaining pressure in the lines. Hoard members Wilton Harrelson Gause and Mrs. Tripp, however, opposed going that far outside the town limits to provide for growth which may never happen. Harrelson argued that developers should help fund the crossovers if they anticipate growth in those areas. "Sometimes these things that look like good investments just don't pay off," he said. rH SELECT ft.
