Pago 2-A-THE BRUNSWICK BEACC Easte BY UUliG itii i tEK When the Easter Bunny makes his annual pass through the South Brunswick Islands this weekend, it is possible that he will be followed by a throng of visitors. And the eggs he leaves in the baskets of some local businessmen may be golden, as he ushers in a tourist season which many believe will be bigger and better than ever. But while most local businessmen anticipate another outstanding summer season, the threat of rain this weekend has some of them concerned that it may not get off to the greatest of starts. According to Shallotte Point Meteorologist Jackson Canady, showers and thunderstorms may develop Saturday but should clear (11 11 III lintn fnr Qiitiflnt* mnptiinti vut vi uuiivin* >ilut iniif^ church services. We're right here at budget time, and I would suggest that's one of the best ways you could spend $20,000." Ms. Ross suggested that the county's new Solid Waste Director !.co Hewett also serve as litter coordinator. However, Ms. Humphries discouraged the idea, saying the \ director probably has enough to han\ die already. Hewett was present at last Thursday's public hearing but did not comment. Other citizens expressed concern about the county's handling of the litter problem, mainly criticizing the solid waste and sheriff's departments. Noting that county trash trucks do nui cover uieir loaas to prevent .spillage while en route to the county landfill. Mayor Barber quipped, "We're not picking up garbage?we're distributing it." Doris Scott of Shallotte said she has reported county garbage trucks that were uncovered and other incidents of littering to the sheriff's department, but she said she doubted that any action was ever taken. "Since we've caught all the robbers in Shallotte, maybe our sheriff's department can get busy and catch all the litterers in the county," Ms. Scott said. Several speakers also remarked that they were dissatisfied with the responses they received whenever they reported littering to law enforcement agencies. However, Ms. Humphries defended law enforcement, saying it is often difficult to prove that a motorist is guilty of littering by simply reporting a license tag number. Ms. Dodd said citizens who witness littering can send the tag number to her office in Raleigh, and DOT will send the owner a letter concerning the alleged offense. Other concerns voiced at the meeting were that prisoners and individuals sentenced to community service work should be required to pick up roadside trash; that the N.C. General Assembly should pass a "bottle bill" that would help reduce the amount of roadside litter by encouraging recycling; that the county should adopt a zoning ordinance to help control community appearance; that fastfood restaurants should provide additional garbage containers for drive-through customers; and that the county's green box sites should be kept as clean as possible. Connor Cox, broker in charge at Brunswickland Realty at Holden Reach, said the weekend promises to be a good one in terms of the number of renters. Jeff Conaway, owner of Jeff's Grocery at Holden Beach, said business should go "full blast" this weekend and that weather will have very little to do with it. "We always do good over here," he added. "The whole beach season's gonna be excellent." Fellow beach shop owner Betty Safrit of Sunset Beach Grocery, however, feels the weather will have an effect on weekend business. "If we have good weather this weekend," she said, "we might have a good weekend. We're always hopeful."
