The first reference to the name of the ( island, he continued, was in Ben- * jamin's will dated 1778, which called it "his beach." Holden went on to talk about his grandfather, John Holden Jr., and the evidence of his desire to develop the beach. During an entertaining speech which focused on some of the early town meetings, he explained how the island was incorporated through the Board of Municipal Control in 1969. Other special guests included state Senator B.C. Soles Jr. of Tabor City; Hugh Dutton, a member of the first board of commissioners; and Lucille Burks, the first town employee of Holden Beach. She served as town clerk for more than 11 years. Alan Holden, the youngest son of John F. Holden and the first child bom to a couple living on the island, spoke highly of the book as he read its front and back covers. Among other things, he said it is written in "common, everyday language" and contains stories of chasing cows on the beach and pulling a fish nook from the mouth of a dog. "All the daily activities that you might find of interest are in this book." Following the ceremony, the first 100 hand-bound volumes of Holden's book went on sale for $14.65 and sold quickly as he spoke with old and new friends.
