IBrierwo BY DOUG RU1TEK Shallotte maintenance workers may soon have a few more miles of roadway to care for if a local developer and the town board reach agreement. Brierwood Estates developer Larry Shreve said last week he will H ask the town board of aldermen to take over maintenance of streets in annexed areas of the golf course subK division as soon as an ongoing road B improvement project is completed. Shreve, president of S&W In vestments Ltd., said he met a few I months ago with a town committee which examined all of the streets in the community and determined where improvements were needed. After receiving town input, Shreve said he had those bad portions of the road cut out and leveled off with about $7,500 worth of Aggregate Base Course (ABC gravel). He said the streets are now ready to be paved iL and should be completed in the near future, depending on the weather. According to Shreve, the streets ill meet town specifications once ley are completed. He said the pavig contract with MAC Construction ompany calls for the streets to be instructed to town specifications. Town street specifications, aceoring to town code, include reiiircments for a 60-foot right-of-way, abilized surface and pavement widis of at least 18 feet, slopes of no lore than five percent and a linimum shoulder width of six feet i both sides. Street surfaces must be stabilized ith either four inches of ABC or six iches of soil type base course comosed of a mixture of sand and clay litable for stabilizing the street surice in all weather conditions. Shreve also said acceptance of the xeets would be in the best interest f Shallotte since the Brierwood states subdivision and the town olh have a lot to offer each other. While there are still a few inividual lots in Brierwood that have ot been annexed, most of the subivision's residential area is in town nd already receives water and iwer service, police protection and ash pickup. The golf course and elated areas have not been offered >r voluntary annexation. Most of the community was annexd in late 1983 and the first half of 384. Shreve said two previous reuests for the town to take over laintenance of the streets were enied although town officials had ientified the areas that needed apair. "If it was not taken it was due to le fact that the town board felt they ceded more repairs done to them," aid Mayor Jones.
