School Bex New members Bob Slockett and Donna Baxter joined the Brunswick County Board of Education Monday night in a meeting that was mostly ceremonial in nature, while the outgoing board enjoyed a ceremony of its own on Friday, The new board delayed business until next Monday, Dec. 12, when it meets at 6:30 p.m. in Southport. In its brief session Monday night, the new board unanimously chose as chairman Doug Baxley of Shallotte. Vice chairman of the board throughout his four-year first term, he won re-election in November. James Clemmons of Leland was unanimously elected vice chairman. In other business Friday, the board upheld a grievance filed by Carlton Sligh of Caswell Beach, who was reassigned this school year from principalship of Iceland Middle School to the Alternative School in Bolivia, where he now operates a special youth counseling program. Sligh successfully appealed a reduction in his overall pay, will return to $4,121 per month. However, it will be frozen there, Kaufhold said. The board had been paying him $192 less a month, maintaining Sligh's base principal's salary, as required by law, but not the principal's local supplement. At a grievance committee meeting after the November board meeting, school board attorney Glen Peterson interpeted the law as applying to the supplement as well.
