annual Emancipation
program
a.m. worship serHivice
The program is
built upon the philosophy that one
cannot appreciate the present
without knowing the past.
Songs and readings will emphasize
the Emancipation Proclamation
issued by President Abraham Lincoln
on Sept. 22,1862, which includes
the following: "That on the first day
of January in the year of our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and
sixty-three, all persons held as slaves
within any state, or designated part
of a state, shall be then, thenceforward,
and forever free and the Executive
Government of the United
States, including the military and
naval authority thereof, will
recognize and maintain the freedom
of such persons, and will do no act(s)
or acat to repress such persons, or
any of them, in any efforts they make
for their actual freedom."
The amendments to the Constittuion
that support the proclamation
will be given also.
Songs used throughout the service
will be those that remind youth of today
of their rich musical heritage.
These will include the anthem, "Lift
Every Voice and Sing," by James
Weldon Johnson, and other musical
selections, such as "Go Down,
Moses," and "Steal Away," which
were sung not only for inspiration but
also as clues to where Harriet Tubman
would be meeting those slaves
escaping to free states.
Retiree Honored

as Sister Annie Bryant's Day, in light
of the afternoon worship service in
her honor. Presiding was Sandra

G. Hewett, Arlena Galloway, Pearlie
