Daniels was averaging 24 points per game to rank second in the WC and first in Brunswick County. Gore was averaging 20.5 points per contest to rank fourth in the con leieuue aiiu second in ine county. North Brunswick's R.J. Johnson, last year's county player of the year, is third in scoring in Brunswick with a 20 point-per-game average. Johnson is also averaging seven rebounds per game to lead the county. Following Johnson in the county scoring department is Ricky Daniels of West Brunswick (19) and Brandon Bryant of North Brunswick (14). Whiteville's 6-foot-5 forward Scottie Logan currently leads the WC in scoring (24) and rebounding (14). Other top league performers include Fairmont's Johnny McLean with a 21.7 scoring average and a 10 rebounds average through three games. ? * Both West and South Brunswick will see basketball action during the Christmas holidays. The Trojans will participate in the Whiteville Christmas Tournament while South Brunswick will take part in an eightteam holiday classic at Greenville. Sfate Grid Titles State prep football champions in South Nip; South Brunswick improved its record to 2-1 last Thursday with a 55-52 victory over winless Topsail in boys' basketball action. Grover Gore scored 15 points and Brent Bishop added 14 to lead the visiting Cougars. Willie Sheppard led Topsail (0-5) with 16 points while Andre Sidberry and Tony Redd added 10 each. Topsail led 9-8 in the first quarter Acme-De Acme-Delco took its second prep basketball decision over Nortl Brunswick last Friday in an 83-81 non-conference win over the hos1 .. Scorpions. William Johnson scored 25 points tc lead the Tigers past the Turntables 72-68. Trampus Gause scored 22 foi the Turntables. The Troopers topped the Kings, 88-75 as Harold Johnson scored 28 foi the winners. Harold Boone led the Kings with 33. Sherman Daniels scored lb point* to lead the Players to a 61-45 win ovei the Raiders. Harold Horton and Clinl Grainger scored 14 each for the Raiders. The Natural Disturbers whalloped the Oilers, 112-46 as Don Britt paced the winners with 21 points. Jimmy Gore led the Oilers with 12. Thomasville returned to the 2-A title game to nip previously-unbeaten Hertford County, 13-10. Thomasville lost to Whiteville a year ago in the championship contest. Swain County won its third state title in 10 years with a 23-7 triumph over host Midway in the 1-A title contest. Swain (Bryson City) won the 2-A crown in 1979 and the 1-A championship in 1985. Cummings (Burlington) romped past two-time defending champion Shelby, 41-14 to win the 3-A cham pionship. A Shelby win would have left the Golden Lions the only team in state history to win three consecutive 3-A titles. And finally, Richmond County blanked West Charlotte, 17-0 to win the 4-A championship played at Wake Forest University's Grove Stadium. Shrine Bowl Crown For Tar Heels North Carolina snapped a seven; game losing streak Saturday with a ! 14-7 win over South Carolina in the I 52nd annual Shrine Bowl high school ! football game at Charlotte's i Memorial Stadium. North Carolina quarterback Jimmy Howell (Brevard) threw for two touchdowns to lead the Tar Heel win. South Carolina still leads the series, 28-20-4. 5 Ton^nii Fnr _ ? I ? ~and held a 21-18 halftime advantage. The Cougars took the lead for good in the third quarter with a 34-29 turnaround. Topsail was able to outscore South, 23-19 in the final period but the Cougars held on for the win. Topsail won the boys' junior varsity game, 62-47.
