Page 12-C?THE BRUNSWICK BEACON. Boat Ramp 8 Permit Issued BY DOUG RUTTEK i The N.C. Division of Coastal k Management last week issued a per- ? mit for construction of a state- C funded, public boat ramp at Holden M Beach. gfj Despite earlier statements that the jlp facility would be completed in time Vjl for next year's tourist season, however, it now appears the state g Wildlife Resources Commission will not be able to begin work on the rarnn I until the middle or end of next summer, according to wildlife conserva- | tion engineer Buddy Phillips. The wildlife commission applied H for the CAMA permit in September, and following the acceptance and review of comments from 14 state H and federal agencies, it was issued last Wednesday. In October, Phillips said the H wildlife commission would be able to start building the ramp under the Holden Beach Bridge by early spring at the latest. He said last week, however, that construction would be delayed at least three months because of work ro on three other projects which have been given higher priority. The state is currently working at Snow's Cut, completing renovations H to bulkheading and relocating two boat ramps. After that project is finished, Phillips said the state will H concentrate on building boat ramps H in Gates County on the Chowan River ?|j and then at Micro in Johnston Coun"Both of those are going to be goodsized projects. It's going to take time," he said. "Right now, I don't [|| see any way it could be done this summer with the projects we've got in front of it." Phillips added, however, "We haven't forgotten about it. It'll come to the top of the list one of these ^ days." The ramp was originally scheduled for completion about three years ago, according to one town official. The proposal calls for construction B of two concrete boat ramps with several loading piers and approx- fl imately 200 feet of bulkheading along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The state will also grade and add gravel to a rectangular parking area about three-quarters of an acre in size. Depending on how the boaters park, Phillips said the lot should accommodate between 20 and 25 || vehicles with trailers. Additional parking spaces, he noted, will be available within walk- H ing distance of the ramp at the regional beach access facility. Once work begins on the double ramp, Phillips said it should take between six and eight weeks to complete. After bulkheads are con structed, he said the lower section of the boat ramps will be poured on site || and cured for two or three weeks before they are submerged. The upper sections of the ramps will then be H added. v Phillips said the cost of constructing the local facility will be between $20,000 and $30,000, which includes material, labor and expenses. In August, Holden Beach Commissioners endorsed construction of the boat ramp after learning that there I was not enough space on the mainland side of the bridge to locate the facility. Reasoning that it was being done at no cost to the town, board members I agreed that it would be in the best interest of Holden Beach to support construction of a boat ramp that would always be available to its residents and visitors. g The issue of location had reemerged following comDlaints nf several citizens about the possibility of increased traffic volume and traffic hazards if the ramps were located on the island. Elsewhere in Brunswick County, the wildlife commission already has boat ramps at Sunset Harbor, Oak Island and on the Waccamaw River which are funded and maintained entirely by the state.
