' Going On BY RAHN ADAMS Catching everything from leiostomus xanthurus to micropogonias undulatus is nothing unusual for Project Scientist George Booth and his staff of biologists at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant. Don't worry, though. Those tonguetwisters?commonly know as spots j and croakers?are more than two of the 210-and-counting species of fish and shellfish that pass through the biology laboratory at Carolina Power and Light Company's facility near Southport. As required by the N.C. Division of Environmental Management, the tsrunswicK Plant's biology lab gathers information on aquatic animals in the Cape Fear estuary, to chart the effects of the plant's operation on them. "Basically, we haven't seen any changes in populations (of fish and shellfish) that you wouldn't expect" due to natural factors, Booth said during a recent media tour of the biology lab. In fact, the number of species continues to increase in the habitats adjacent to the plant, he added. i Monitoring programs that have been underway at the Brunswick Plant since 1974 serve two purposes?to protect the environment fnd to keep the plant running at peak eiiciency, Booth said. Used for cooiinV some 1.2 billion to 1.5 billion galons of water per day?about II2 percent of the Cape Fear River's flowv-are drawn through the plant's intake canal and later discharged into theocean on the eastern end of Oak Island Not jour average fishermen, Booth and hft staff go to considerable lengths \o haul in and identify their catches .A series of filters?from a V-shaped"fence" across the head of the intake, to fine-mesh "traveling screen" alsemblies in front of the plant's punps?keep out most larger aquatic aninals. Booth said 85 to 95 percent 01 ne larger marine life is turned awayby the fence, a bridgelike structure consisting of threeeighth-inch mi^h screen panels. Booth suspects, though, that the fence has become a feeding station for sea turtles, liver the course of a year about five llggerheads manage to break throug\ the screens and enter the canal, where they are caught with tanglenets and returned offshore, he said. Cp&L has a permit from the N.C. Wldlife Resources Commission to caplvre the turtles in the canal. \ Much smaller orgaiisms?the ones that can filter througt the fence but not the traveling screens at the pumps?are washef into two 4,000-foot-long "water slides" that carry them to an eightAcre holding pond near the biology lib.
