of Ash have announced their parents' upcoming marriage. The wedding will
be held on Aug. 5 at 4 p.m., at Sharon United Methodist Church on Holden
Beach Road. Friends and relatives of the couple are invited.

birth of their third daughter, Suzie
Jane Todd.
On arrival at 7:57 p.m. June 27 at
The Brunswick Hospital, she weigh
ed 7 lbs., 2 oz? and was 20 inches
long.
She joins Sylvia, 12, and Tabatha,
4.
Grandparents are Mrs. Edith Hege
of Shallotte and the late Donald Hege
and Thelma and Lee Todd of
Shallotte.
Jasper
Rosa Green and Lynndell Jasper of
Route 4, Shallotte, are the parents of
a son, Bryan Lynndell Jasper.
Born at 9:25 a.m. June 24 in The
Brunswick Hospital, he weighed 4
lbs., 14 oz., and was 19 inches in
length.
He joins siblings Jessica, Marlena
and Lashonda.
Maternal grandparents are Wilbur
and Bonnie Green of Shallotte. Pater
nal grandparents are Charlie and
Lorine Wigfall of Spring Valley, N.Y.
Dinner's On House
For Top Volunteers
For the first time since the event
began, Brunswick County's outstan
ding volunteers won't have to buy
their own meal at the annual
Brunswick County Volunteer Infor
mation Center awards banquet.
A grant will cover the cost of award
nominees' meals at this year's din
ner, which will be held 6 p.m. Satur
day, July 15, at Bolivia Elementary
School.
County commissioners have also
been invited as guests.
Percy Woodard, the newly elected
chairman of VIC's board of directors,
will serve as master of ceremonies.
Outgoing chairman Jamie Orrock,
director of the Brunswick County
Department of Social Services, will
be the speaker. Stephanie Hewett of
Supply will entertain with a medley
of songs.
More than 100 volunteers will be
honored with certificates, plaques,
pins and other awards. Sixteen
volunteers will receive special
recognition? four as governor's
award recipients and 12 as VIC
award winners.
Recipients were selected by the
Newcomers Club.
Local VFW Units Win Awards
Two local VFW posts were recently
recognized for accomplishments dur
ing the past year.
Holden Beach Post No. 8866 won
the Billy Ray Cameron Award at the
ststs convention for V<?t*?r?ns of
Foreign Wars, held June 22-25 at the
Four Seasons Holiday Inn in
Greensboro.
Ladies Auxiliary President Bertie
K. Caiian accepted ine award on
behalf of the post. The plaque is
presented to the post which donates
at least SI per member to the
Sing To Help
Tri-Beach VFD
A gospel sing set for Saturday, July
8, will benefit the Tri-Beach
Volunteer Fire Department.
The sing begins at 7 p.m. at the fire
station. It will feature music by The
Macedonia Trio of Columbus County,
Von Ferguson and the Coastal Voices
and Gene Pinkerton.
No admission will be charged;
however, donations will be accepted,
said spokesman Marcia Rabon of the
Tri-Beach VFD Ladies Auxiliary,
which is sponsor of the event.
The concert had been scheduled for
June i7, but was pusipuiieu because
of an electrical storm that could have
damaged the musicians' sound
equipment.
Cameron fund, which is used to pro
vide educational scholarships for
deserving children of veterans, said
Publicity Chairman Regina Britton.
The auxliary also was recognized
for having the greatest precentage
increase of membership for the cur
rent year in the state.
Merle Goldsberry of the Calabash
VFW Post No. 7288 accepted an
award for that post's participation in
the sale of Buddy Poppies and for
community services rendered.
Lt. Col. Oliver North, introduced
by U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms, was as sur
prise guest speaker.

Three Get Academy Appointments
ihree Brunswick County men have
been appointed to U.S. military
academies by U.S. Congressman
Charles G. Rose and will report this
month.
Having three appointees from
Brunswick County in one year is
"quiet unusual," according to Vivian
Posey, a caseworker in Rose's office
for the past five years whose respon
sibilities include handling academy
appointments.
"I can't recall having that many
before from such a rural county,"
she said last Friday in a telephone in
terview. "In a Cumberland or New
Hanover County it's not so unusual."
The appointees are Hans C.E.
Bean, David S. Jones and James K.
Bryant II.
Bean, a graduate of South
Brunswick High School, will attend
the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
at King's Point, N.Y. He is the son of

Bryant, whose permanent address

U.S. Military Academy at West

ty have been named to the Western
Carolina University dean's list for
the spring semester.
They are Robert D. Luug and
Sonya Williams Long, both of
Shallotte, and Laura Marie Enzor
and Jeffrey Joseph Hilts, both of
Leland.
Students who achieve a 3.0 grade
point average on a school's 4.0 scale
are eligible for the dean's list.
Bazen Reports
U.S. Marine Sgt. Richard C. Hazen
recently reported for duty with the
3rd Force Service Support Group on
Okinawa. The son of Leo E. and
Glenys C. Bazen of Boiling Spring
Lakes, he joined the Corps in October
1979.
Receives Medal
U.S. Marine Gunnery Sgt. George
F. Newman has received the Naw
Commendation Medal for
meritorious service while serving
with Marine Forces, Panama.
Newman is currently serving with
2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune.
His wife, Martha, is the daughter of
John and Mildred Jacobs of Leland.
Wigal Overseas
U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class
Scott A. Wigal recently deployed to
the Mediterranean Sea while serving
aboard the tank landing ship USS
Barnstable County, homeported in
Norfolk, Va.
During the six-month deployment,
he will participate in numerous
military exercises and visit foreign
countries that include Portugal,
Spain, France, Italy and Israel.
A 1984 graduate of South
Brunswick High School, he joined the
Navy in January 1985. He is the son of
Robert L. and Donna J. Wigal of
Southport.
Receives Wings
William E. Bringe, son of Leroy
and Carol Bringe of Route 5,
Shallotte, has received the silver
wings of an Army aviator after com
pleting the rotary wing aviator
course at the U.S. Army Aviation
School, Fort Rucker, Ala.
In addition to receiving his wings,
Bringe was appointed as a warrant
officer. A 1981 graduate of Penn Hills
High School in Pittsburgh, Pa., he
was trained in leadership and
helicopter flying techniques as well
as instrument flying.
