CEDAR GROVE AREA NEWS Church Stresses Family Unit BY BARBARA T. HEWETT Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Supply built its worship service Sunday around one of society's oldest institutions, the family. The Rev. Freeman Gause , used the book of Ruth to illustrate his lesson on the importance of main taining family unity in a troubled world. For the evening service the church joined the Hewett family in their reu nion at the Lockwood Folly Com munity Building. Choir To Sing Cedar Grove Choir will participate in a benefit concert for the Volunteer Information Center on Saturday, Ju ly 8, at Shallote Middle School. The church and community are looking forward to being a part of this noteworthy cause. Group I meets next at the home of Rebecca Johnson; Group II meets at the home of Lee and Etta Hewett for the meeting that was canceled last week so that members could attend a fiinpral Church members who would like to have a group meet in their home can contact Chairpersons Azalee Johnson or Claudia Fullwood respectively. Tune In Be sure to listen to WVCB Radio Station in Shallotte for the Cedar Grove Area News on Thursdays at 3 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:15 a.m. Also listen for Moments of Inspira tion, the gospel music program that airs on Sunday evenings. Weekly Scripture The Scripture for the week comes from II Thessalonians 1:12, "Then everyone will be praising lite name of the Lord Jesus for the results they see in you, and your greatest glory will be that you belong to him. The tender mercy of our Father and of the I/ord Jesus Christ has made all this possible for you." Enjoy But Don't Pick Roadside Wildflowers "Please don't pick the wildflowers." That's the message the N.C. Department of Transportation wants to get across to motorists traveling North Carolina who admire wildflowers planted along the road side a little too much. The N.C. Department of Transpor tation has planted more than 80 varieties of wildflowers along state roads. The program started with a 12-acre pilot project in 1985 and has since expanded to more than 300 acres of flowers such as Black-Eyed Susans, Queen Anne's Lace, Coreop sis and Catchfly. Bill Johnson, head of NCDOT's Landscape Unit, believes the wildflower program is a growing suc cess, with "a very positive response" from motorists. However, he feels that flowers lost to picking and cutting are the biggest problem in the program. Not only is it unsafe to park cars along the roadway, he noted, it is also sgsinst stst? Ibw to nick, cut, rsmovs or destroy wildflowers or any other vegetation from the highway right of way. "Please don't pick the flowers," said Johnson. "Remember that they weie piauieu iui every one tu enjoy." A goal of the landscape unit is to in crease the number of acres planted each year. Funds from personalized license plates are used to pay for the flower program. Last year the sale of specialized plates contributed more than $150,000. Federal matching grants provided more than $100,000 to plant wildflowers along the North Carolina interstate highway system. In response to inquiries about types of flowers and planting procedures used in the program, Johnson's unit has published, "Wildflowers on North Carolina Roadways," a guide to the most common varieties of wildflowers found along state road ways. It tells everything a property owner needs to establish his own wildflower meadow. The guide lists the common and botanical name of the flowers as well as their range and blooming period. Included are 77 varieties of wildflowers, including 30 types of commercially grown seed now being planted by NCDOT. The guide details the technique used by NCDOT in planting its wildflower seed, from soil preparation to maintenance. Copies of the guide can be obtained by writing the Landscape Unit, NCDOT, P.O. Box 25201, Raleigh, NC 27611.
