PEOPLE IN THF NEWS Local Man Reappointed To Post Gov. James Martin has reappoint ed James W. "Bubba" Smith of Southport to the Employment Security Commission. He will serve until June 30, 1993. Smith is a dispatcher for the International Longshoremen Asso ciation, Local 1838, and is president of Dutchman Creek Acres Real bstate inc. A veteran of inc U.S. Air Forte, he attended Cape Fear Technical Institute. A licensed real estate broker and master Mason, Smith is a deacon of First Baptist Church in Southport and a member of the American Legion and the Southport Historical Society. He serves on the Southport Oak Island Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Committee for the City of South port. The Employment Security Com mission plans and implements pro grams dial reduce and prevent unemployment in the state. Completes Workshop Nancy Coble, a teacher at West Brunswick High School, completed the summer session of the Teaching Physics with Technology workshop presented by the Department of Physics at N.C. State University July 24-28. The workshop prepares partici pants in instructional strategies that use computer software, videotapes, videodiscs and other new technolo gy to add to their instruction of high school physics students. Earns Master's Degree Cathy Dawn Milligan of Shal lottc was awarded a master of edu cation degree in summer com mencement exercises held Aug. 12 at the University of South Caro lina's Columbia campus. She completed the master's with a 4.0 gradepoint average, majoring in early childhood education. South Middle School 'Teams' Require Different Supplies Every student at South Bruns wick Middle School is assigned to a team, according to Principal Bob Rhync. Supplies required for the upcom ing school year vary from team to team, which he said parents should keep in mind when shopping to pre pare students for the first day of school. Sixth graders on the Bears team arc asked to bring five individual composition notebooks, pencils, pens, and a folder with four pock ets. Those on the Monarchs team arc asked to bring four lightweight plastic three-ring, loose-leaf binders and pencils. In the seventh grade, the Sand Dollars team should bring No. 2 pencils only, no pens, along with a spiral notebook for social studies, and loose-leaf notebooks and paper for communications and malh class es. Those on Ihc Dolphins I cam should bring a three-ring poly binder, a book bag, two 3-subject spiral notebooks, two 5-subjcct spi ral notebooks, a small spiral note book, loose leaf paper, pencils and pens. Eighth graders on the Shamrock team arc asked to bring pencils, blue or black pens (no Eraser mates), three-ring binders with five index tabs, notebook paper, two 3 subjcct composition books, three clear plastic theme folders, a yellow highlighter pen, compass, protrac tor, scientific graph paper, ruler, col oring markers, and an intermediate or collegiate level dictionary. Those on the Nugget team arc to bring two large composition notebooks, loose leaf paper, pencils, dividers and a ring binder. Members of Ihc Stars team will need a notebook for General Music, a notebook for Spanish, a loose-leaf binder for French, and a looseleaf binder and a SI lab fee for Careers.
