Two Fuil Days Of Entertainment
On Tap At N.C. Oyster Festival
Performers will be as plentiful as
seafood this weekend at the 9th
Annual N.C. Oyster Festival, as two
full days of entertainment are slat
ed.
For the first time in the festival's
history, entertainment will be pre
sented non-stop on the festival stage
from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and
from noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday,
said Entertainment Chairperson
Ann Laughinghouse.
Entertainment includes a variety
of music to please any taste.
Dancing and story-telling also are
on the card.
Another festival first will be a
formal opening ceremony Saturday
at 10 a.m., beginning with perfor
mances by the West Brunswick
High School Band and Chorus.
At 10:30 a.m., local dignitaries
will welcome festival-goers and
hold a ribbon -cutting to officially
open the annual event at 11 a.m.
"We just felt there needed to be
something a little more formal than
in other years," Mrs. Laughing
house said. "We thought an opening
ceremony would give the festival a
more formal feel."
At least three of the "acts" Sat
urday are no strangers to the Oyster
Festival. Back by popular demand
from last year's festival is the
Wilmington band Backside, featur
ing lead vocalist and guitarist A1
Watkins.
The three-piece band, which has
appeared throughout the Carolinas,

will play four sets Saturday after
noon at noon, 1:15 p.m., 2:15 p.m.
and 4:15 p.m.
The group's repertoire includes
rock, country and beach music. Wa
kins has appeared on stage with
big-name artists such as Barbara
Mandrell, The Kendalls, The Tams
and The Drifters.
The Sonshine Cloggers of
Wilmington also have a return en
gagement with two performances
Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. and 2
p.m.
The popular dance group has per
formed throughout the state for the
past four years. Other previous ap
pearances in southeastern North
Carolina include the N.C. Azalea
Festival, the Piney Woods Festival
and the Pleasure Island Festival.
The third returning act is the an
nual Brunswick County Bullshoot
ing Contest at 3 p.m. ? a competi
tion that promises some of the
tallest tales ever told in the South
Brunswick Islands (see related sto

If those performers aren't enough
to satisfy any entertainment ap
petite, this year's festival offers at
least six lovely entertainers whose
performances will be as pleasing to
the eye as to the ear.

monies, at least five other area
beauty queens will either sing or tap
dance at 12:45 p.m.

member ensemble from the
Brunswick Christian Center at 3
p.m.
