Two Earn Degrees From ECU
Two Brunswick County students
were among 1 ,750 graduates to re
ceive degrees and ccrtificatcs of ad
vanced study Dec. 9 at East Caro
lina University, Greenville.
Patrick Albois Smith of Route 2,
Supply, received a bachcior of sci
ence degree in business administra
tion. Jan Caroline Broadway re
ceived a bachelor of science degree
in nutrition and dictetics.

Completes Course
Navy Airman Apprentice Eric L.
Lee, son of Barbara and James W.
Lee Sr. of Route 4, Leland, has
completed an aviation machinist's
mate basic jet engine course.
During the five-week course at
the Naval Air Technical Training
Center in Millington, Tenn., Lee
received introductory instructions
on the characteristics and operating
principles of jet engines. His studies
included engine lubrication, ignition
and fuel systems. He also studied
the procedures for refueling and de
fueling aircraft; removal and instal
lation of aircraft engines; and opera
tion of aircraft ground handling
equipment.
Lee is a 1986 graduate of North
Brunswick High School. He joined
the Navy in March 1989.
Arrives For Duty
Air Force Airman John R. Hicks
has arrived for duty at Hickam Air
Force Base, Hawaii. He is an ap
prentice Morse systems operator
with the 6924th Electronic Security
Group.
A 1987 graduate of McDowell
High School in Erie, Pa., Hicks is
the son of Kathryn M. AJloway of
Shallottc.
Serves As Page
Nancy L. McGee of Shallottc
served as a page last week with the
N.C. Department of Administration
in Raleigh, as part of the governor's
page program for high school stu
dents. A sophomore at West Bruns
wick High School, she is the daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred McGce.
Governor's pages are chosen on
merit, after having been recom
mended by teachers, principals or
other community leaders. The pages
assist the various departments in
their communications with other
state government offices. They also
get the opportunity to tour state
museums, the governor's mansion,
legislative building and state capital
building.
Makes Phonathon Calls
Steven Greenwood of Supply,
son of Will and Roberta Mumford,
has raised more than $113,943 so
far as a student caller for the Uni
versity of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill Phonathon.
For the first time, the Phonathon
reachcd the $1 million mark in
pledges and donations by Novem
ber. Director Rob Temple estimated
the fund-raising effort will raise as
much as S1.5 million before the
campaign ends in April.
Phonathon callers, who are paid
$4 to $5 per hour, contact about
65,000 UNC alumni, parents and
friends, and ask for donations to the
school's academic programs. Do
nors can designate a particular scho
ol, department or program at the
university to receive the money.
Finishes Training
Private First Class Tracy E. Gray
has completed training at the U.S.
Army Infantry School. Fort Ben
ning. Ga. A 1988 West Brunswick
High School graduate, he is the son
of Alice and Arvel E. Gray of Route
3, Shallotte.
During the course, students re
ceived training which qualified
them as light weapons infantrymen
and as indirect fire crewmen in a ri
fle or mortar squad. Instruction in
cluded weapons qualifications, tac
tics, patrolling, land mine warfare,
field communications and comba'
operations.
Recruit Finishes
Seaman Recruit Rodney Bums
has completed training at Orlando,
Fla. During the eight-week training
cycle he studied general military
subjects designed to prepare him for
further academic and on-the-job
training in one of the Navy's basic
fields.
Bums is the son of Bonnie K. and
Daniel W. Bums Sr. of Route 4,
Leland. A 1985 graduate of North
Brunswick High School, he joined
the Navy in September, 1989.

The Thalian Association commu
nity theater will hold auditions for
the musical comedy Funny Girl
Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 5 and 6,
at 7 p.m. in The Loft at 115 Red
Cross Street, Wilmington.
The well-known musical, which
tells the siory of famous Ziegfeid
Follies star Fanny Brice, requires a
large cast of performers with seven
principal roles for women and three
for men. There arc no children's
roles available.
Noah Allen will direct the play,
scheduled to be performed March

Lions Donate To Wrestling League
The Shallottc Lions Club plans to
contribute SI 00 to the Brunswick
County Youth Wrestling League to
help fund a wrestling trip to Pen
nsylvania.
The club voted at its Jan. 18
meeting to provide the support
Members also heard a presentation
from a hearing aid specialist who
noted that the need for hearing as
sistance will become more promi
nent with an aging population.
Plans were announced for the
club's 43rd anniversary party,
scheduled Feb. IS at the Jones Byrd
Club House at Sea Trail Plantation,
Sunset Beach.
The Lions Club also voted at a
recent meeting to extend member
ship to Greg White of Supply.
