Lady Trojans Split League Pair With Cougars, Mustangs BY JOHNNY CRAIG The West Brunswick Lady Trojans divided a pair of Wac camaw 2-A Conference basketball games last week highlighted by Friday's 61-45 romp over county rival South Brunswick. Earlier in the week (Wednesday), die West girls dropped a 40-31 deci sion to league-leading South Rob eson. The results left the Lady Trojans 3-5 in the WC and 6-6 overall. West continues league play Friday host ing Fairmont and visiting South Robeson in a return engagemeni Tuesday. South Brunswick West Brunswick used a 14 -point first-half advantage to cruise past South, 61-45 while gaining its third league win of the season. Four Lady Trojans landed in dou ble-figures led by Christy King's 19 points, Pamela Dciric and Rebecca Buffkin with 11 each and Cynthia Williams with 10. South Robeson Plagued by only eight first-half points, the West girls never found their scoring grove until late in last Wednesday's 40-31 loss to league leading South Robeson. The Lady Mustangs (7-1, 11-2) were led by Doris Chavis with 17 points. Buffkin led West with 10 and Seiena McNeil added eight. "We just didn't rebound well nor did we do a good job blocking out underneath the basket," said West head coach Brcnda Council. "Our ueiciisive press looked good at times though.": "Rcbccca Buffkin got into early foul trouble and with her out of the game we weren't able to get the ball inside," added Council. South Robeson took a 6-2 lead in a low-scoring first quarter and led 19-8 at the half. Fairmont, East Bladen Defeat North Fairmont and East Bladen handed North Brunswick a pair of Wac camaw 2-A Confcrencc basketball road defeats last week as the Scor pions fought to stay out of the league cellar. Fairmont took a 75-53 win on Tuesday while East Bladen ripped the Scorps 103-61. The twin losses dropped North to 1-6 in the WC and 3-10 overall. The Scoipions continue league play Friday visiting South Brunswick and host first-place East Bladen (7 0, 10-3) on Tuesday in a return matchup. Fairmont used a 21-2 first-quarter bulge to cruise to only its second league win of the season. Jonathan Leggett scored 22 points and James Moore 10 to lead the Golden Tornadoes (2-5, 5-10). Tigc Munn pumped in 29 points for the Scorpions. Following its hot first quarter, Fairmont continued to pour it on in the second period taking a 41-17 halftimc lead. Changes Proposed In Hunting, Fishing Rules A plan to increase the possession limit on deer from two to four is one of many changes proposed by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Com mission that will be up for discus sion ia'icr this month at public hear ings across the state. Bladen County Courthouse in Eliza be thtown will be the site of ?Kio district's hearing, schcdu!cd Thursday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. It's one of nine hearings planned across North Carolina over the next two weeks to gather responses to five pages of proposed changes in state hunting and fishing rules. Most of the proposed changes would affcct specific counties, hunt ing grounds or lakes and rivers and would not affcct local hunters and fishermen. However, ihe wildlife commis sion will be taking hearing from sportsmen on several proposals that would affect the entire state. The wildlife commission has also suggested prohibiting the harvest of striped bass between 22 inches and 27 inches long from April 1 through May 31 in coastal rivers and tribu taries.
