DANIELS BREAKS SCORING RECORD West Boys Sweep Fast Whiteville And Fairmont DANIELS REBOUNDS ? It was a big week for Daniels who broke the West single-game scoring record with a 44-point performance against Whiteville last Tuesday. South Surprises East Biaden, Nips Scorpions The South Brunswick boys hand ed visiting East Bladen its first Waccamaw 2- A Conference basket ball loss of the season last Tuesday, 72-61. The Cougars also edged host North Brunswick 60-53 on Friday for a sweep of league games last week. The results improved South to 7 2 in the WC and 13-5 overall. The Cougars remained in third place in the league standings only a game behind co-leaders East Bladen and West Brunswick. North Brunswick Preston McGriff scored 20 points and Vernon Battles and Robert Flythe added 11 each to lead the Cougars to their 60-53 win over North in an important intracounty and league contcst. The upstart Scorpions, winners of only one WC game this season, bat tled to a 53-53 tie in the final min utes of the fourth quarter before South outscorcd North 7-0 in the time remaining. Tige Munn scored 15 points to lead North Brunswick (1-8, 3-12) followed by Deris Vernon with 10. South took a 14-10 lead in the first quarter but saw its edge trimmed to one, 22-21 , at halftimc. The Cougars could manage only a two-point, 37-35 lead at the end of the third period before outscoring North 23-18 in the final quarter. East Bladen In a battle of the WC's two Cougars last Tuesday, South used a late 11-0 run to spurt past previous ly-unbeaten league leader East BIutit*" *72 6!. Battles* three-point goal with 4:52 remaining sparked the South 90- second rally that kept the host Cougars within a game of the league leaders with less than two weeks remaining in the regular sea son. East Bladen opened the game with a 19-12 lead in the first quarter before South outscored the Cougars by 10 points in the second period for a 31-28 halftimc advantage. The South lead was reduced to one, 4645, at the end of the third period but it was the Cougars' big 28-point fourth quarter that high lighted the victory. South 's 6-foot-9 sophomore cen ter Preston McGrifT dominated the inside with 11 points and 17 re bounds before fouling out with 2:26 remaining. Battles led South scoring with 20 points followed by Robert Flythc with 19. Robert Henry scored 19 points and Darrell Gillespie added 17 to lead East Bladen (7-1, 10-4). South also won the junior varsity game 49-44 as Mike Davis scored 17 points to lead the Cougars, fol lowed by Jeff Hankins' 12. Anthony McKoy scored 31 to lead East Bladen. The host Trojans made it a sweep of league opponents Friday with a 90-83 defeat of Fairmont. West improved to 8-1 in the WC and remained tied with East Bladen for first place. The Trojans (11-6 overall) continue league action Friday hosting West Columbus and visit North Brunswick on Tuesday. Boys' games begin at approximate ly 8 p.m. following the girls and junior varsity contests. Fairmont A first-half runaway nearly turned into a giveaway for the Trojans last Friday before turning back Fairmont 90-83. West blew the game open from the start with a 9-0 opening and a 16-1 lead with 2:09 to play in the first period. By the end of the quar ter the Trojans had taken a 25-5 lead and showed no signs of letting up. The West lead grew to 28 points by halftime with the Trojans claim ing a 46-18 edge before a different Fairmont team took the court in the second half. The Golden Tornadoes outscored West 11-4 to open the half and by Uiv VHU V/t UK Mill VJ \f U?U IV 1 nviv within 13,65-52. Fainnont continued to chip away at the Trojan lead and drew within 10, 85-75 with 2:32 to plav on Jonathan Grissctt's jumper. Grissctt finished with a game-high 31 points including a three-point goal that pulled the Golden Tornadoes to within eight, 89-81, with 27 seconds remaining. Daniels led the Trojans with 26 points while Tim my Farmer added 20 and Jimmy Johnson 18. Terrace Watson scored 17 points for Fairmont (2-6, 5-11). Whiteville Daniels' school-record 44 points helped the Trojans to a regular-sea son sweep of defending WC tourna ment champion Whiteville in last Tuesday's 89-81 win. The Trojans had defeated the Wolfpack in both teams' league opener in early January. Daniels' record-breaking perfor mance came almost five years to the day (January, 1985) that Robert Thompson set the West Brunswick single-game scoring record of 37 points in a Three Rivers 3-A Con ference win over visiting Clinton. And the Trojans needed every one of Daniels* points along with Farmer's 16 and Jeff Bernard's 14 to get the win. Both teams battled to a 15-15 first-quarter tie before Whiteville (5-4, 11-6) managed a 32-30 half time lead. Prior to earning her Class A , professional card in 1980, she was a recreation supervisor in Wilson and an assistant professional at the Wilmington Golf Club. She has worked as a teaching professional in Cape Cod, Birmingham, Alabama, and at Topsail Greens. Merrill's duties at Brick Landing will focus on conducting golf schools, weekly clinics, and giving private lessons. Her weekly clinics will be conducted each Monday for men and Tuesday for ladies. Her golf teaching methods are based on Hogan's fundamentals and she endorses Jimmy Ballard's con nected swing theory. The golf schools will involve both range instruction and playing golf over four days and three nights at Brick Landing. Video enhanced instruction will also be available in her lessons. Tournament Host Brick Landing and the Breakers Resort Hotel at Myrtle Beach are hosting a Winter Four-Ball Cham pionship this weekend, February 10-11. Two-man teams will com pete over 36 holes with the field flighted after Saturday's round. The entry fee includes all the golf with carts, a cocktail party Friday night, breakfast each day and dinner Saturday. FALL TO EAST BLADEN Lady Cougars Rip North The South Brunswick girls divid ed a pair of Waccamaw 2-A Con ference basketball games last week defeating North Brunswick 65-39 on Friday after dropping a 55-38 decision to East Bladen on Tuesday. The Lady Cougars, now 3-6 in the WC and 7-8 overall, continue league play Friday as the regular season winds down to its final week of action. North Brunswick Tessa Lee scored 34 points and Millie Ray added 10 to lead the Lady Cougars to their win Friday over visiting North Brunswick. Nicole Young led North (2-7, 6 9) with 13 points followed by Tammy Ballard with 11 and Tasha Robbins 10. East Bladen Despite a roster reduced to only six girls. East Bladen prevailed with its 55-38 win led by Martin's 26 points. Lee again led the Lady Cougars with 26 points but South was hurt by an early scoring drought. East Bladen (5-3, 9-5) took advantage of a cold South shooting hand taking an 11-4 first-quarter lead before expanding its margin to 14 points, 28-14 at the half. South *s cold hand carried over at the free throw line where the Lady Cougars were 0-for-9.
