CHURCH ACTIVITIES Calabash Presbyterian Church Sets Organizational Service Calabash Presbyterian Church, a new church thai is serving the Cala bash-Sunset Beach area, will hold its formal organizational service Sunday at 9:30 p.m. as part of morning worship service at the Calabash VFW Hall. The service will be conducted by a commission of the Coastal Carolina Presbytery. Charter members will be receiv ed, said Jerry C. McCann, pastor. Also, nine persons will be ordained and installed as elders: Horst Burk crt, Archie Farr, Vic Hahn, C.F. Houglan, Mary Mcdciros, Doris Minor, Christine Rosdahl, Walter Ruback and Julia Thomas. Marks Anniversary Von Ferguson and The Coastal Voices, a popular area gospel group, will mark its third anniversary with a sing at Dixon Chapel United Mcuiuuisi Church at Vamamtown Saturday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. There will be no charge. In addition to Mrs. Ferguson, members of the group include Lan don and Marie Gray. Horace Jackson of Wil mington, retired pastor of Sunset Park Baptist Church, will be the guest speaker for the Brunswick Baptist Association's "Here's Hope" rally 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at Southport Baptist Church, South port. "Here's Hope. Jesus Cares For You is the theme for the Southern Baptist Convention simultaneous revivals which will be held nation wide this spring. Thirty-one mem ber churches of the county associa tion will participate in March and April. In addition to Jackson's message, spokesman Brenda Crisco said the rally will feature an associational choir presenting two songs. Here's Hope and The Name of Jesus, a va riety of congregational singing, and personal testimonies of faith by Ruby Carsonova, Faith Baptist Church; Tyler Potter, Lcland Baptist Church; and Rcbccca Chapman, Southport Baptist Church. Sets Yard Sale Seaside Christian Fellowship will hold a yard sale Feb. 232 and 24 in front of King's Plaza shopping cen ter on N.C. 179 near Seaside. Clothing, books, tools, radios and television sets and other items will be offered, along with baked goods, coffec, cold beverages and hot dogs. Attendees can register for free for a handmade mirror to be awarded in a drawing at the sale. Quartet To Appear The Regent Quartet, formerly of Liberty University, Lynchburg, Va., and now based in Myrtle Beach, S.C., will appear at Jennies Branch Baptist Church near Shallolte March 4 at 7 p.m. Organized in January 1986, the quartet offers a mixed southern gos pel repertoire in its ministry. The Rev. James Smith of Nakina is the host pastor. Sponsor for the event is the Youth Department, under the super vision of Arvella Marlowe of Pleas ant Grove; the Rev. Samuel Stanley of Nakina; Dorothy Lee Frink, wife of mass choir president Raphell Frink of Little Prong Missionary Baptist Church in Ash; and the Rev. M.C. Herring of Ml. Zion Church in Longwood. He serves as advisor to the Woman's Home and Foreign Missionary Convention Planning Session for Youth. Mrs. Hewett is in charge of the Little Dynamics Offertory program, assisted by Miss Butler. Each of the association's IS churches will send a representative with their offering. The youth pre senting the greatest offering will be crowned Little Dynamics 1990 by the title-holder for 1989, Kim Gore. This program is so popular with the people of this area that it usually draws a standing room only crowd. It pays to plan to arrive early to get a seat. Mrs. Stanley, of Pasadena, Md., is a na tive of Bolivia, the daughter of the late Morris Roosevelt and Willie Mae Evans, and the widow of the late Loftin Stanley. She recently re ceived a subscription to this news paper from a local relative and now says she won't ever be without it again. She is within two years of retirement with 30 years of service. The funeral was held Feb. 16 in the Ccble Ward-Smith Funeral Ser vice Chapel, Supply, with the Rev. Curtis Coleman officiating. Burial was in the Griffin Cemetery, Ash. McKcithan was born in Ash on April 26, 1909, the son of the late Gaston and Doncy Simmons Mc Kcithan. He was a U.S. Army veter an of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Mabel C. McKeithan of the home; three sons, Charles McKcithan, Lloyd McKcithan and Paul McKeithan, all of Ash; a brother, Jesse McKcithan of Ash; a sister, Evia Long of Ash; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. GEORGE EGAN HUBBARD SR. George Egan Hubbard Sr., 99, of South pen, died Feb. lA. in J. Arthur Doshcr Memorial Hospital follow ing a long illness. He was a retired automobile mechanic and had re tired from the Southport Volunteer Fire Department as chief after 32 years. A memorial service was held Feb. 15 in Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. P.D. Midgctt officiating and C.B. Caroon assist ing. Ray H. Walton was to deliver the eulogy, with remarks also by Chief Greg Cumbcc on behalf of the Southport Fire Department Hubbard was bom in Hardee - ville.. S f . Oct. 18, 1990, the son of the late Sen. W.R. Hubbard and Leila Sanders Hubbard of South Carolina. A member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he had served on the board of trustees and as Sunday School superintendent and choir member. He served on the board of trustees of Doshcr Hospital as well as several terms on the city board of aldermen, played on and managed the city baseball team. He was also a member of the local and national AARP, the Senior Citizens of Southport, the Saturday Morning Prayer Breakfast, the Methodist Men's Club and the North Carolina Senior Citizens Association. He was a past member of Woodmen of the World. Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Dallas (Leila) Figoii of South port; a son, George Egan Hubbard Jr. of Newport News, Va.; two brothers. Ryan Hubhard of RncVy Mount and Harold Hubbard of Charleston, S.C.; four grandchil dren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund. KALLEN TAYLOR The funeral for Kallcn Taylor was held Feb. 12 at Rashy Bay Cemetery. He was the newborn son of Ms. Barbara Taylor of Shallotle. HAL MARVIN FLOYD Hal Marvin Floyd, 56, of Route 3, Leland, died Feb. 13 in Duke Medical Center, Durham. He had retired from the U.S. Coast Guard as a lieutenant commander and was a partner in Old Church Woodcraft, Southport. A memorial service was held Feb. 17 in Woodburn Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Peter Hale of ficiating. Floyd was born in Brunswick County on Aug. 25, 1933, the son of Mrs. Mary Peadrick Floyd Pierce of High Point and the late George Edwin Floyd. He was a member and elder of Woodburn Presbyterian Church, and was a member of the Belville ABC Board and the Retired Officers As sociation. He served as the U.S. Coast Guard representative on the Officers Association executive board. Survivors in addition to His mnth. er are his wife, Mrs. MarySue Forbes Floyd of the home; a son, Lt Glenn Floyd, with the U.S. Navy, San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Susan Floyd of the home; a brother, Joseph B. WALTER LEON SMITH Walter Leon Smith, 84, of Route 1, Southport , died Feb. 17 at his residence. During his lifetime he had been a farmer and a longtime employee of the N.C. A native and lifelong resident of Brunswick County, Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Althca Price Smith, in 1987. He was of the Baptist faith. Mormons Travei To Capitai About 60 local residents were ex pected to leave Brunswick County today (Thursday) on a trip to the na tion's capital where they planned to visit the Washington Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The local group will join a group of about 300 people from Wilming ton and surrounding areas for the three-day trip. Rodney S. Earle, president of the church's Wilmington Stake, said at tending the temple has two purpos es: "It enriches the lives of those who are able to attend and worship in the temple, and it is an opportuni ty to be of service by doing proxy work for those who have passed away." The Washington Temple, one of 43 temples of the church world wide, is open only to worthy mem bers of the church. It is a sacred place where marriages for eternity and other ordinances are performed. After a person has received the or dinances necessary for his own sal vation, he is encouraged to do proxy work for those who died without the opportunity to complete the ordi nances for themselves. In addition to the regular ordi nance work to be accomplished, a special assembly will be held in the temple Saturday for all members of the Wilmington Stake.
