Area Residents Win Net Titles Wilmington residents Mark Ncal and Mike Mailer were winners Sat urday in the first singles tennis championships to be held at Brick Landing Plantation near Ocean Isle Beach, said tennis pro Rick Mal lory. Ncal won the 16-and-under age group by defeating Lynn Davis of Wilmington in the finals by a score of 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. In semi-final matches. Ncal beat Brian Shclborn of Whitcville, while Davis topped Hoke PoIIic of Wilmington. Jody Dale of West Brunswick High School won the consolation bracket. In the open division tournament for players up to 18 years of age. Mailer was a straight-set winner in the finals, defeating Mike Makow ski of Wilmington by a 6-2, 6-3 score. Semi-final matches saw Mai ler beat Chris Ncal, and Makowski top Mark Ncal of Wilmington. Chris Moore of Whitcville was the open division consolation bracket winner. McGriff Leads South Brunswick In Playoff Opener Preston McGriff scored 25 points and Vernon Battles added 24 to lead visiting South Brunswick past N. C. Science and Math 71-58 last Tues day in the opening round of the east ern 2-A Sectional III basketball playoffs. Robert Flythe added 16 for the Cougars (20 7). South Brunswick led 18-14 m Li ic first quarter and extended its lead to 1 1 points, 39-28, at halftimc. Science and Math, the third-seed ed team from the Capital Area Con lerence, cut the Cougar lead to sev en, 50-43 at the end of the quarter but South outscorcd the Unicoms 21-15 in the final period for the win. Shallotte Rescue Offers EMT Class An emergency medical techni cian (EMT) training course will be offered April 10 through July 28 at the Shallotte Volunteer Rescue Squad building. Shallotte VRS member Danni Moore will teach the course, which will meet each Tuesday and Thurs day from 7 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Students can register at the first class meeting, April 10. Sponsored by Brunswick Com munity College, the course is free to persons affiliated with local fire, rescue or law enforcement units. Other students must pay $15. RECREATION BRIEFS Saddle Club Slates First Show Brunswick County Saddle Club will hold its first horse show of the season Saturday, March 17, at 6 p.m. at the showgrounds on U.S. 17 just south of Brunswick Community College. The show will include classes for all ages. A trophy and six ribbons arc to be awarded in Little Britches, Junior and Senior classes, as well as a high point trophy for each divi sion. Scavenger Hunt Set The Long Beach Parks and Rec reation Department will hold a St. Patrick's Day scavenger hunt Satur day, March 17, beginning at 12:30 p.m., at the Long Beach Recreation Center. The event is for children 12 years of age and under. Participants will hunt for a "pot of gold." Wrestling Association Free style Tournament Saturday at Terry Sanford High School in Fayette ville. James Wcmvss of Shallotte, Cameron Cowan and Deke Freeman of Southport and Paul Gove, Casey Kennedy and Brett Hobbs of Leland all won first-nlarp trophies. They were competing in the 14-and-under age group, said county athletic co ordinator Joe Rosselli. Travis Rogers of Leland placed second and Jeremy Cox of I itlanri trw-vV- fourth place in his class. Competing in the 14- to 16-year old age group, Blake Hobbs of Leland took third place and Greg Rogers of Leland, fourth. The fish was caught 60 miles ofTshore. Its size qualifies Duncan for a citation from the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries. He and four other Holden Beach area residents caught their limit in kings during the trip. The first local event of the year is the Shallotlc Point VFD Flounder Tournament, scheduled June 8 and 9, out of Tripp's Fishing Center at Shallotie Point. The third annual oOuui oruns wick Islands King Classic, the first local king mackcrcl tournament cf the year, will be held Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1 and 2.
