Hours: 9:30^ MONDAY THRU SATURDAY Early 'Greening' Of Some Lawns Evidence Of Troublesome Weeds BY WILLIAM BARROW JR. Agricultural Extension Agent A number of lawns arc really be ginning to green up across Bruns wick County. For some prop erty owners, the change repre sents an early break in dormancy for grasses such as bermuda, centi pede, 7.oysia and St. Augus tine. Others, barrow however, are seeing a return of trou blesome weeds. Clover, broadleaf plantain, dock, dichondia, mouse ear chickwce and others are showing their colors. These weeds tend to emerge in weak, thin turf stands. Once estab lished, the weeds arc difficult for the turf to overcome. There arc a number of post-emcr gcncc chemicals that can aid in weed control. Choose a product based on your particular weed prob lem and turfgrass. The most popular post-emergcncc hcrbicides are 2,4 D, Mccoprop (MCPP) and dicamba. All of our warm season grasses arc more sensitive to these than cool season grasses such as tall fescue, hluegrass and perennial rye. Bermu da grass has the greatest tolerance to the widest range of hcrbicides. Be sure to read the label carefully for all applications. Manufacturers have skirted this sensitivity problem by mixing prod ucts that give a wider degree of con trol and arc safer for the grass. When purchasing products, look for those formulated specifically for southern grasses. Apply these materials evenly in one to two gallons of water per 1,000 square feet of turf. Small hand sprayers generally work best when using a herbicide. Hose end sprayers arc not recommended for control of emerged weeds. For additional information, con tact your garden supply dealer or the Agricultural Extension Servicc office at Bolivia. Also, information on home lawns, landscape products and their use will be available at the Brunswick Horticultural Show March 30-April 1 at the N.C. Na tional Guard Armory in Shallottc.
