PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Grotto Saunders S&l&ct&d To Work V^ifh Tsoch&r Troinees Grctta Saunders, a leather at Union Primary School, Shallotte, is one of 60 teachers statewide chosen to work with North Carolina Teach ing Fellows at Meredith Col lege May 29 Junc 1. She was se lected to work with the teacher trainees by a panel at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement SAUNDERS of Teaching (NCCAT) at Cullo whcc, where she was a tcachcr scholar in November 1987 and again in July 1988. In addition to the spring session, she will also continue to work with a selected group of students until they gradu ate from colleges and universities across the slate. The state's Teaching Fellows Program subsidizes the college costs of selected high school gradu ates with scholarship/loans at a sum of S20.000 for four years. For every year a fellow teaches in a North Carolina public school after college graduation, one-fourth of the "loan" is forgiven. An employee of the Brunswick County Schools for 19 years, Ms. Saunders holds a master's degree in school administration, a degree in art education and certification in gifted/talented education and as a mentor. Green Selected Donna Green of Bolivia is the bus driver of the month for April at Bolivia Elementary School, where the South Brunswick High School graduate also serves as a rc source assistant. GRKKN ^jrs Green also serves as secretary of the Bolivia P.T.A. Gains New Title Linda P. Phillips, formerly of Southport, has been named law en forcement liaison for the Securities Division, Department of the Secre tary of State. She will be responsi ble for coordinating the law enfor cement activities of the department and informing professional associa tions of related programs available through the department. These include the "Investor Al ert!" program aimed at preventing securities fraud. It includes a work shop offered to civic groups and other organizations. Former Southport alderman and former aide to Rep. David Rcdwinc, Ms. Phillips will also continue to work on the department's legislative agenda. Studies Jet Engines U.S. Navy Airman Rccruit Ste phen O. Perkins, son of William and Lois Willoughby of Shallotte, has completed the Aviation Machinist's Mate Basic Jet Engine Course at the Naval Air Station Memphis, Mil lington, Tenn. A 1989 graduate of West Bruns wick High School, Perkins received introductory instructions on the characteristics and operating princi ples of jet engines. Receive Scholarships Five Brunswick County students arc among 400 recipients of N.C. Teaching Fellowship scholarships, according to the Public School Forum of North Carolina. The local recipients are Robin Yvcttc Freeman, Mary-Anna Fran ces Hale and Andrea Eden Phillips, all of the Lcland area; Shcryl Dawn Burks of Southport; Lcnora Michele Lewis of Long Beach; and Stephen Matthew Lancaster of Route 2, Supply. Each fellow will receive an an nual $5,000 scholarship loan during their four-year college careers. The loan will be forgiven in exchange for teaching at least four years in a North Carolina public school. The Teaching Fellows Program was approved in 1985 by the N.C. General Assembly upon recommen dation by the Public School Forum. Some 1,750 high school seniors competed for the scholarships this year. The new class will join nearly 1,200 teaching fellows already enrolled in North Carolina univer sities. Extra Hours Noted Extra hours spent at Bolivia Elementary School have earned Beth Conrad Barton of Southport, contract speech therapist, selection as its April volunteer of the month. The Toledo, Ohio, native has 20 years of experience in speech thera py in a variety of settings, serves on the advisory board of the Brunswick Community College Interagency Program and has coordinated the Southport Head Injury Support Group. She holds a bachelor's de gree in hearing and speech science from Ohio University and a mas ter's of education in communica tions from Georgia State University. Completes Course U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Command er Thomas J. Martin, recently grad uated from the Armed Forces Staff College. His wife, Jane, is the daughter of Thomas and Madeline Harris of Calabash. Martin is a 1975 graduate of the Coast Guard Academy, New Lon don, Conn., with a bachelor of sci encc degree; and a 1985 graduate of Webster University, St. Louis, Mo., with a master of arts degree. Pope Jr. has completed Army basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. During the training, students received instruction in drill and ccrcmonics, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid and Army history and traditions. The son of Michael and Linda Pope of Leland, he is a 1989 gradu ate of North Brunswick High School. Completes Course Spec. Desmond J. Vain has com pleted a U.S. Army primary leader ship coursc. StudcnLs received train ing in supervisory skills, leadership principles and small unit training techniques essential to a first-line supervisor in a technical or admini strative environment. Vain is a combat engineer with the 237th Engineer Battalion in West Germany. He is the son of Henry E. Vain of 225 Lansdownc Road, Bolivia. Finish Training U.S. Navy Seaman Recruits Nor ris E. Brown and Qucnlin L. Brown have completed training at the Recruit Training Command, Orlan do, Fla. The eight-week course cov ered instruction on general military subjects. Norris Brown is the son of David and Bessie Brown of Route 2, Boli via. Qucntin Brown, a 1989 gradu ate of North Brunswick High School, is the son of Carl Vernon and Beverly Brown, both of Lcland. Sherrod Inducted Long Beach resident Elizabeth McNeil Sherrod, a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was among 24 journal ism students inducted into Kappa Tau Alpha, a national journalism so ciety. A spccial awards convocation was held April 9 in Chapel Hill. The honorary society is dedicated to the recognition and promotion of scholarship in journalism. About 10 percent of journalism students arc inducted into the society. Eligibility is determined by academic standing. Attends Meeting Hubert Reaves, environmental health specialist with the Brunswick County Health Department, partici pated in the N.C. Passenger Safety Association Board meeting March 29 and 30 at Wrightsville Beach. He is a member of the board's confer ence committee. The organization's annual confer ence will be held April 22 through 24 at the Blockade Runner, Wrightsvillc Beach, and will be at tended by representatives from safe ly, law enforcement, health, educa tion and civic organizations across the state. Accepted In Program Carolyn Williams, assistant prin cipal at Bolivia Elementary School, has been accepted in the doctorate '?J in educational administration program at the University of South Carolina at Columbia. A Winnabow native and Boiling Spring Lakes resident, she has 22 years of experience in education, includ ing classroom and resource teach ing, guidance counseling and ad ministration. She holds a bachelor of science degree from Campbell University and a master's of educa tion from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and main tains membership in several profes sional organizations. Receives Diploma Alan Robinson of Brunswick County recently received a diploma for completion of this winter's Master Farm Management Seminar at N.C. State Univer sity, Raleigh. Conducted by the college's Department of Agricultural Economics and sponsored by Farm Credit of North Carolina, the one- week program brought farmers from around the state to Raleigh to improve their farm management skills. Davis Commended U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cor poral Michael G. Davis, son of Dorothy and Fred Davis Jr. of Route 5, Lcland, recently was commended while serving with the Second Mar ine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point Davis was recognized for his out standing performance of duty, pro fessionalism and overall dedication to the service.
