Spokesman Wilton Harrclson said the church's name came from use of the riverfront property as a religious camp site where Bishop Francis Asbury preached as early as the 1790s. From its early beginning, when Asbury dcscribcd the people as "backward, ignorant and indifferent to the welfare of their souls," said Harrclson, Camp has grown into a "caring, viable membership" of nearly 450 members with a modem facilty. The church has experienced its most rapid growth in the past 10 years. Camp advanced from being part of a four-point charge to a sta tion church with a pastor of its own in 1952. To Honor Earth Day Terry W. Munn, director of Brunswick County's Clean County Depart ment, will be guest speaker at a special roga tion honoring the 20th anni versary of Earth Day, Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Epis- MUNN copal Church in Shallottc. "We hope to promote understanding of our environment, health and natural resources," said Munn, noting that Earth Day also is part of National Keep America Beautiful Month. Earth Day was first proclaimed in 1970 by Sen. Gaylor Nelson of Wisconsin, as a day for discussing the environment. Earth Day, he said, would mark the beginning of "one of the toughest and most political fights this country has ever seen." On this 20th anniversary, the em phasis is on making "Earth Day Everyday" by focusing on how indi vidual action ? or lack of action ? affects the environment, which has bccomc a major political issue of the 90's. The Rev. Dr. Richard W. Warner is rector of St. James, which is lo cated on Main Street in Shallottc. More information on the service is available by calling 754-5099.
