Born in Shallotte on Dec. 22,
1903, she was the daughter of the
late Lucian and Wally White Hol
dcn. She was a member of Epworth
United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Wilson was preceded in
death by her husband, Thomas Wil
son.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. Ina Lee Elks of Wilmington;
two brothers, Louie Holdcn of Wil
mington and Clemit Holdcn of Hol
dcn Beach; a sister, Mrs. Lcla
Woodsidc of Cocoa, Fla.; a grand
son and two great-grandchildren.
STUART HALE KIRKLAND
Stuart Hale Kirkland, 73, former
ly of Southport, died April 20 at his
residence in Richmond, Va.
A memorial scrvice for family
and friends was to be held at 11
a.m. Wednesday, April 25, at South
port Presbyterian Church, where he
was a member. The Rev. Dr. Murray
Page officiated. Burial with full mil
itary honors was to be held at Ar
lington National Cemetery, Arling
ton, Va., at a later date.
Kirkland was a retired vice presi
dent of Metropolitan Life Insurance
Co., had retired as a captain from
the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, and
was a member of the Southport
Lions Club, the Lconia, N.J., Amer
ican Legion Post, and the Moose
Lodge.
Survivors include three children,
Stuart C. Kirkland of Richmond,
Va., Dr. Margaret K. Bradley of
Boston, Mass., and Kathryn K. Pitt
man of Southport.
Memorial contributions may be

Lester Fields, of Route 1, Lcland
(Northwest community), died April
17 in Brunswick County.
The funeral was April 19 at
Bethel AME Church, with burial in
New North West Cemetery, Lcland.

George William "Bill" Lennon of
Leland died April 19 at New Han
over Memorial Hospital, Wilming
ton, at the age of 90. He had been a
longtime deacon and treasurer of
Goshen Baptist Church of Leland.
The funeral was held April 22 in
Goshen Baptist Church by his neph
ew, the Rev. Linwood Peterson, and
the pastor, the Rev. Clyde Smith.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs.
Roma Collison; a brother, Lawrence
5. Lennon; and a half-sister, Mrs.
Carolyn Glass, all of Baltimore,
Md.; two daughters, Mrs. Betsy

officiating. Burial was in Gurganus
Cemetery at Shallotte Point.
Born in Shallotte on Jan. 16,
1907, she was the daughter of the
late Robert and Mary Elizabeth Car
lisle Millikcn. She was a member of
Village Point United Methodist
Church.
Survivors include a daughter.

McKinney was born Oct. 17,
1923, in Drawdy, W.Va., the son of
the late Kelly and Cora Alice Whit
ten McKinney. He was a member of

Richard William Buckbcc, 74. of
Boiling Spring Lakes, died April 20
at his home.

Church, where he was a member,

Buckbcc was born July 21, 1915,
in Spcncctown, N.Y., and had lived
in Boiling Spring Lakes for 12
years. He was employed with Penn
Central Railroad for 42 years. He
had served as a commissioner in
Boiling Spring Lakes for four years.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Helen Baker Buckbcc of the home;
a son, Bruce Buckbcc of West Dun
dee, 111.; a daughter, Mrs. Carol
Borda of Bright, lnd.; two brothers,
Willard H. Buckbce of San Antonio,
Texas, and Bert H. Buckbcc of Boil

Novella Nelson Cox, 58, of

Dan Bennett officiating. Burial was
in Brunswick Memorial Gardens.
Bom in Brunswick County on
Jan. 21, 1932, she was a daughter of
the late Webb and Daisy Benton
Nelson. She was a member of Old
Shallotte Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband,

Becky C. Smith of Eiizabcthtown
and Anita C. Evans of Marion, S.C.;
a brother, Manley Nelson of Shal

Homer Woodrow "Tex" Shcrrill,
74, of Souihport, died April 20 in
the VA Hospital in Faycuevillc. He
was a retired plumber.
A graveside service was held
April 22 at Old Souihport Cemetery
by the Rev. Wayne Trcxler.
A native of Robbinsville, Shcrrill
had lived in Souihport 53 years. He
was a U.S. Army and U.S. Navy
veteran of World War II. Shcrrill
was a member of the Disabled Am
erican Veterans and the Veterans- of
Foreign Wars and had retired from
employment at Sunny Point Mili
tary Ocean Terminal.
He had previously worked willi

Mrs. Kitson was bom in Horry

Hewctt was bom in Supply on
Sept. 17, 1912. the son of the late
John Julius and Ida Brown Hewett.
He was a charter member of Sup
ply Baptist Church and the Shallotte
Masonic Lodge No. 727 A.F. &
A.M. He retired from the Wilming
ton Baptist Association and was a
member of the Brunswick Pastors
Association.
He was preceded in death by his
first wife, Mary Louise Lcnnon
Hewett, in October 1960.
Survivors include his wife, Mild
red S. Hewett of the home; two
sons, James Wilbur Hewett of Col
umbus, Miss., and Donald R. Hew

Ocean View Convenes Saturday

meeting of the
minds within
the Ocean View
Union.
The positive
assets of this
organization,
including its own burial association,
will be among the theme discus
sions held Saturday when the Ocean
View Union convenes Saturday and
Sunday at Little Macedonia Mis
sionary Baptist Church in Supply.
The Rev. Charles Jacobs is the host
pastor. Saturday's session convenes
at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Willie
Frink of Ash presiding at the men's
union. Lunch will be served at
noon, and a youth talent hour by the
host church will end the day.
The major theme for the event is
"What Is Our Role in a Drug and
Drop-Out Society?" presented by
either Moses Stanley or his alter
nate, Joseph Stanley. ?
Other speakers include Dosher
Marlowe of Little Prong (alternate
James Hobson Bryant), on the buri
al association; Gregory Hewcu of
Cedar Grove (alternate Herman
Hill), devotional; Rev. Jacobs and

Compete For Scholarships
The association's annual Sunday
School scholarship competition will
be held in connection with the Fifth
Sunday Singspiration at Pleasant
Grove Missionary Baptist Church at
Thomasboro.
The program starts at 5 p.m. and
is sponsored by the seniors of the
association's 15 member churches.
Student speakers will vie for
awards of varying amounts that cor
respond with their years of matricu
lation. A participant who will attend
a four-year college will receive a
S500 scholarship to be awarded (he
second semester of their freshman

This year marks the 38th consec
utive observance of the National
Day of Prayer, according to a news
release. The theme of this year's
celebration is Renewing America's
Moral Heritage.
Following unanimous action of
both houses of Congress, former
President Ronald Reagan signed a
bill May 5, 1988, making the first
Thursday of every May the National
Day of Prayer.
Swamp Residents Invited

the day will provide residents of the

Revival, Sing Set
A gospel sing Sunday, April 29,
at 1 p.m. at Lcttics Grove Church
will feature The Believers, a gospel
group from Bolivia.
The public is invited to the song
service and also to revival services
that will be held April 30 through
May 4 starting at 7:30 p.m. each
day, said spokesman Sandy Duran.
Guest missionary speaker will be
the Rev. Billy Carlylc. Special mu
sic will be featured at each service.

Blanchard To Speak
The Rev. Diane Blanchard will be

at Camp United Methodist Church
of Shallotte.
Born and raised in Minnesota,
Ms. Blanchard earned her master of
divinity degree at Duke University
and has been a United Methodist
minister for eight years.

Dosher Hospital Plans Health Fair
A variety of health screenings
and tests will be offered Sunday,
May 6, when Doshcr Memorial
Hospital sponsors a health fair at
the Wilson's Shopping Plaza in
Southport.
A 17-test blood profile; vision,
hearing and blood pressure checks;
body fat percentage tests and glau
coma screenings will be among the
tests offered at the heaiih fair, which
is scheduled to run from 1 p.m. until
4 p.m.
A new program at this year's
health fair will also provide screen
ings for lower leg arterial disease,
according to a hospital news re
lease.
Hospital employees, emergency
medical technicians, volunteers and
mcdical staff members arc expected
to be on hand. Door prizes and bal
loons will be given away.
