Region X JUCO Baseball

former South Brunswick baseball standout Scott Gales is the Region X
Independent Junior College Conference's leading hitler with die Southeast
ern Community College Rams in Whitcvillc.
Ciales, a freshman, is hitting at a hot .390 clip with 23 hits in 59 plate
appearances in games played through April 15.
This is nothing new for die former Cougar as he has been the league's
leading hitler for the past three weeks.
Gales went 2-for-2 last week in an 8-1 loss to Louisburg Junior College
in the second game of a doublcheadcr.
SCC freshman Dino Daniels, a former West Brunswick star and county
baseball player of the year last spring, saw two innings of relief pitching in
the first game against Louisburg, a 9-2 Ram loss.
Gales also saw three -plus innings of pitching duty for the Rants in the
first game of a doublcheadcr against Spartanburg Methodist last weekend.
SCC suffered tw in losses, 13-2, in the opener and 13-1 in die sccond con
test.
Gales, who was credited with the loss, was one of three Rams pitchers
to see action in the opener. SCC hurlcrs walked 14 batters in the game
while giving up only six hits.
In a doublcheadcr loss to Chowan Junior College earlier last week,
Daniels was the losing pitcher going six-plus innings in a 9-4 defeat in the
opener.
Daniels yielded only two runs till the seven inning when Chowan ex
ploded lor seven runs in the final two frames.
Gales went 2-for-4 in the game including a soio home run in the third
inning.
Southeastern is currently 7-18 overall.
Former Scorp To Miss Playoffs
Cleveland Cavalier rookie forward Chuckic Brown, a former North
Brunswick and N.C. State basketball standout, broke a bone in his foot dur
ing practice last Wednesday and will likely miss the National Basketball
Association playoffs that began last weekend.
Brown fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot and may possibly
need surgery to repair.
The Cavaliers opened the NBA Eastern Conference playoffs last Thurs
day against the Philadelphia 76crs.
Brown, a second-round NBA draft selection by the Cavaliers last
spring, has been a valuable performer for Cleveland this winter since three
front-line starters suffered serious injuries prior to the start of the current
season.
Fairmont Wins St. Pauls Tourney
North and South Brunswick weren't the only Waccamaw 2-A Confer
ence baseball teams to sec tournament action over the Easter holidays.
Fairmont, tied for fourth in the WC, captured the St. Pauls Diamond
Classic with wins over die host 1-A Bulldogs and East Central 2-A Confer
ence foe James Kenan.
West Columbus was the winner of the annual Jiggs Powers Invitational
at Williams Township defeating Bladcnboro for the championship in the
eight-team tournament.
Host East Bladen, who currently shares sccond place in the WC with
North Brunswick, suffered a 3-0 loss to Clinton in the championship game
of the Elizabcthtow n Optimist Easter Tournament.
And East Bladen wasn't the only league team to lose its own holiday
tournament as host Whitcvillc saw an "outsider" win its event for the third
straight year. Wallace-Rose Hill won this year's Whitcvillc tourney after
Pender had captured the last two titles.

Scorpions Sweep Past South
Brunswick, West Columbus
North Brunswick remained in
sccond placc in the Waccamaw 2-A
Conference baseball racc last week
with a sweep of South Brunswick
and West Columbus in league play.
The Scorpions (7-2, 7-6) edged
host South Brunswick 9-8 Friday
after taking an 11-2 romp over West
Columbus on Tuesday.
North continues league play Fri
day hosting first-place Whitcvillc.

The hitting of Duanc Perkins and
Corey Harrison powered the Scorpi
ons to their sccond win of the sea
son over South Brunswick.
Harrison had two doubles while
Perkins two hits including a double.
Jcron Monroe went 2-for-3 with
three stolen bases to lead the
Cougars (4-5, 7-8).
North erupted for all nine runs in
the sccond inning.
David McDowell was the win
ning pitchcr throwing the first three
innings before getting relief help
from Darius Vernon and Chris
Walker.

The Scorpions rode the pitching
and hitting of a pair of juniors,
Chris McBridc and McDowcll, to
ihcir 11-2 romp of visiting West
Columbus.
McBridc hurled a two-hitter anil
struck out 14 while getting the win.
Sophomore Steve Price provided re
lief help in the late innings.
McDowcll was equally effective
at the plate with three hits including
a three-run homer.
Walker added to North's 13-hit
attack with a pair of doubles and
Perkins had two hits including a
home run. Harrison and Vernon also
had two hits cach.
North held a 4-2 lead after three
innings before blowing the game
open with a six-run fourth. The
Scorpions added their final run in
the sixth.
West Columbus scored both its
runs in the second inning.

North ripped visiting South
Brunswick 17-1 last Friday but the
Lady Scorps were pushed to the
limit in grabbing a 20-18 high-scor
ing win over host West Columbus.
North Brunswick, now 9-0 in the
WC and 10-1 overall, continues
league play Friday visiting
Whiteville while traveling to West
Brunswick Tuesday. Both games
begin at 4 p.m.
South Brunswick
Lakita Robinson's four-hit effort
along with seven RBIs powered the
Lady Scorpions' romp last Friday.
Tabitha King also had three hits
and three RBIs and Lolita Hill had
three hits and two RBIs for North.
West Columbus
The Ljdy Scorpions staged the
rally of the season in last Tuesday's
20-18 edging of West Columbus.
North overcame an 11 -run deficit in
the early innings to get the win.
Dawn Sholar led the Lady Scor
pions with four hits and four RBIs.
West Columbus (2-6, 2-6) opened
a 15-4 lead in the third inning be
fore North rallied to get the win.
