JOHN CLIFFORD BODA SR. John Clifford Bcxla Sr., 73. of Autumn Care Nursing Center, Stal lone, died June 26 in Autumn Care. A private memorial serviec was to be held at a later date, with burial in Wilmington National Cemetery. Boda was born in Verona, Pa., on May 20, 1917, the son of the late Clifford and Stella Langford Boda. Me was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired steel worker. Survivors include a son, John Boda Jr. of Wilmington, ami a sicp granddaughter, Janctt-Ann Boda. KLIZABKTH Z. The funeral was June 29 in Zion United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Billy Peelc, pastor. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Goodman was bom Jan. 5, 1914, in Richmond, Va., the daugh ter of the late Charles S. and Essie E. Tanner Zuidema. She was a member of Zion United Mcihodisl Church at Town Creek and was the widow of Dr. E.C. Goodman. Survivors include a son, Joseph Goodman of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Margaret Goodman Shel ton of Lcland; a sister, Emily Z. Slaughter of Wilmington; and three grandchildren, Joseph William Shclton, Charles Brock Shclton and Robert Davis Shclton. Memorials may be made to Zion United Methodist Church. WILLIAM HARGNKTT GARMAN William Hargnetl Garman, 67, of Wilmington and formerly of Caro lina Shores, Calabash, died June 27 in New Hanover Memorial Hospit al. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7288 and Calabash Elks Lodge No. 2679 conducted a memorial service June 29 in the Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel. Garman was born in Berlin, Pa., on Sept. 24, 1922, a son of the late John and Sue Decter Garman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was founder of Rock wood Plastics Manufacturing in Pennsylvania and Brunswick Business Service in Shallotte. He was a member of Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, North Myrtle Beach, S.C., a charter mem ber of Calabash Elks Lodge No. 2679, and a member of Calabash VFW Post No. /2HK and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was past president of the Carolina Shores Property Owners Associa tion. Survivors include his witc, Mar tha Harding Garman of the home; a son, William W. Priu of Shallolte; iwo daughters, Sandra Lee Cline of Somerset, Pa., and Peggy Prill Rabcr of Shallotte; a brother, John A. Garman of Baltimore. Mil; and two grandchildren, Brandon and Briu Rabcr of Shallottc. LKVVIS EDSEL ROSS Lewis Edscl Ross. 74. of Boiling Spring Lakes, died June 27 in Mill haven Convalescent Center in Wil mington. A graveside service was June 30 at Eventide Cemetery, Spencer, W.Va., with the Rev. Lester Walker officiating. A native of Ulcr, W.Va., he hod lived at Boiling Spring Lakes since 1973. He was a U.S Army vetenin of World War II, a member of First Baptist Church of Boiling Spring Lakes, VP.1/ Post '0400 and retired from Union Carbide Corp. Survivors include a stepson, Wil liam A. Birchard II of Fairfax, Va.; a niece, Linda Ross Sicrs of Char leston, W.Va., and a nephew, Robert L. Ross of Newton, W.Va. Ross was preceded in death by his wife, lmogcne Ross, who died April 1,1990. JOSEPH BEVERLY COCHRAN Joseph Beverly Cochran, 79, of South port, died June 28 in Doshcr Memorial Hospital. The graveside service was June 30 in Northwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Wayne Trexler officiating. Cochran was bom Sept. 20, 1910, in Boston, Ga., and moved to Southport in 1932. He was a farmer, a member of Southport Baptist Church and an active participant in conservative politics. Survivors include ^iis wife, Cas sic Smith Cochran of the home; four sons, Joseph Beverly Cochran Jr. of Smyrna, Ga.. James Daniel Cochran Sr., Paul William Cochran Sr. and Gerald Rc.d Cochran, all of SOulhpcn; a daugntCi, Jean C. rlui lips of Southport; a brother, E.C. Cochran of Thornasvillc, Ga.; three sisters. She had been a lifelong member of Little Macedonia Baptist Church and was active in home missions. Survivors include her husband, Walter Harvey Robinson; two sis ters, Lillie Grace Hankins of Supply and Sallie Tucker Galloway of Boli via; two brothers-in-law, six nieces and three nephews. (Buddy) Taylor Jr. of Wilmington; nine grandchildren and two great-urandchildren. MARY COS TIN KLYNN Mary Costin Flynn of Burgaw died June 30 after a long illness. The funeral was July 2 in the chapel of Quinn-McGowcn Funeral Home, with burial in Rivcrview Memorial Park. She was bom in Watha to Jessie Justice Wagstaff of Watha and the late Robert Arthur Costin. Survivors in addition to her mother include her husband, Henry A. Flynn of the home; two sons, Doug Cummings of Wilson and Dale Cummings of Boiling Spring Lakes; three brothers, Haiberi Cost in of Boiling Spring Lakes and Bobby Costin and Linwood Costin, both of Watha; and three grandchil dren and a god-child. Ms. Polomis was born in Men ominee, Mich., on Aug. 23, 1955, the daughter of Kathleen Ryan Pe terson and Eugene Polomis. She was employed by Bricrwood Buiiuers, Shaiioue. In addition to her parents, sur vivors include her daughter, Jenni fer Polomis of Shallotte; a brother, Steven Polomis of Applcton, Wis.; a sister, Wendy Sue Polomis of Ashc villc; and her stepfather, Dwight Peterson of Shallotte. SUSAN TATK KING Susan Tate King, 75, of Southport died July 1 at her resi dence. She was the first librarian of the Brunswick County Library, which she helped to establish. The funeral was to be today, July 5, at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Frank Ross officiating;. Burial was to be in Old Smithvillc Burying Ground. Mrs. King was bom Feb. 13, 1915, in Newton, Ala., daughter of the late Augustus Walter and Florence Victoria Stanford Tate She was the widow of Philip King Jr., who died April 30, 19XK. She was a resident of Soulhport for 35 years. She studied library sci ence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hili and was a member of Woodbine Garden Club. She was a past board member of the Brunswick County Players and a member of Highland Falls Country Club in Highland Falls. She wrote human interest stories for local newspapers and wrote the historic plaque that stands at Bonnet Creek in Soulhport. During World War II, Mrs. King was a war corre spondent and spoke lor democracy as an Armed Forces Radio counter point to Tokyo Rose. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jcannette King Laslcy of Soulhport; a stepson, Philip King III of Charlotte; a stepdaughter, Ms. Susan H. King of Hawaii: three brothers, Samuel F. Tate of Marietta, Ga., AAV. Tate of Ozark, Ala., and James Jackson Talc of Newton, Ala.; and six grandchil dren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brunswick County Public Library, St. Philip's Episcopal Church, J. Bryan Dosher officiating. Burial was in Northwood Cemetery. Morrill was born Aug. 10, 1922, in Wilmington, a son of the late Benjamin W. and Lucy Edwards Morrill. He was a U.S. Army veter an of World War II and a retired salesman for The Menncn Company. He was also a retired mortician, having retired from Bass Funeral Home in Rock Hill, S.C. In recent years he had worked with Peacock-Nownam Funeral Home in Soulhport. He was a member of Rock Hill I/vlgo No 111 A.M. & F.M. and a Shriner. He was a member of the Soulhport Cemetery Commission. Survivors include his wife. Mrs. Lillic Rogers Morrill of the home; a daughter, Lorctia M. Irvin of Hilton Head, S.C.; a brother, Benjamin W. ELMER FARTHING RAMSEY SR. Elmer Fartlung Ramsey Sr., 65, of Route 4, Leland. died July 1 in New Hanover Memorial Hospital, Wilmington. The funeral was to be at 11 a.m. July 4 in the Market Street Chapel of Andrews Mortuary by the Rev. Jerry Green and the Rev. Kenneth Emanuel. Burial was to be in Flynn Cemetery in Hallsboro. Ramsey was born in New Hanover County on Oct. 13, 1924, the son of the late Robert Henry and Margaret Jerald Ramsey. He served in the U.S. Army dur ing World War II and was a member of VFW Post No. <>408, Leland, and was associated with Spirittine Chemical Co. for 43 years. Survivors includc his wife, Christine Jordan Ramsey of the home; three sons, Elmer Ramsey Jr. of Wilmington, Robert William Ramsey Sr. of Leland and Louis Ronald RSr of I rlnnrf; 3 daughter, Pat Norris of Leiand; three brothers, George Thomas Ramsey of Burgaw, Samuel V. Ramsey of Wilmington and Roger C. Ramsey of Currie; eight grand children; five great-grandchildren and an aunt. GKRALDINK M. HKNDKRSON Geraldine M. Henderson, 69, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and formerly of Milwaukee, Wis., died June 28 in HCA Medical Center, Palm City, Fla., after a long illness with thyroid cancer. The funeral will be 4 p.m. July 6 at Happy Home Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Smith offici ating. Burial will be in the Happy Home Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Henderson was born in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of the late Edward and Gertrude Kaniss Winkler. She was a resident of Florida for 13 years, having re tired to Naples, Fla., in 1977. She moved to Palm City in 1985 and re cently had moved u> Port St. Lucie. She studied home economics at Girl s Technical School in Milwaukee and was a member of the Stewart Club. Survivors include her husband, Harold C. Henderson; a daughter, Linda Slclling of Reseda, Calif.; a son, Wayne Lein, president of SeaCoast Fire & Safety in Nakma, which does business in Brunswick County; a sister, Pauline Gutsch of Fort Atkinson.
