Swelling, Shrinking Of Wood Related To Humidity Levels Those la/y, hazy days of hot, hu mid summer weather have arrived. The moisture related to that humidi ty shows up in wood, whether in furniture, cabinets, house structure or outbuildings. "Have you ever noticed in the summer how the crack in the dining room table disappears or a drawer in a chest becomes sticky, or an out side door of your house becomes hard to shut?" asked Milton Cole man, county extension director. The swelling that wood under goes during hot, humid days is natu ral. The moisture content in the wood always tends to reach an equi librium with the surrounding hu midity in the atmosphere, he said. When the humidity goes up, the wood tends to pick up the moisture and swell. When the humidity goes down, for example, in the winter in a heated home, the wood tends to lose moisture and shrink. It would not be uncommon for the moisture content of the wood in our furniture and cabinets to go from a low in the winter of 4 per cent 10 a high in the summer of 10 percent or more, Coleman says. A piece of solid oak or maple one foot wide across ihc grain may swell as much as one-eighth inch before the summer ends, then shrink back down in the winter, he said. The swelling is a gradual thing; it doesn't happen overnight. Happy Birthday Mama Patty Junes Love. Donna. C.R. and Dinkv Louise Coleman said lhal oncc lumber is curcd in a kiln, the ending dimen sions of the piece are noi perma nent; wood will still shrink and swell with changes in humidity. lie said property owners can min imize some moisture-related prob lems in wood and wood products by following these guidelines: 1) If building furniture or cabi ncts, use kiln-dried lumber. Air dried lumber will generally not be dry enough for fine furniture in your home. 2) When rcfinishing an old piece, or finishing a new item, finish all surfaces with a good coaling of paint, varnish or lacquer. This means the bottom side of a table, chair or dresser lop. Good coaling will reduce ihe rate of moisture pickup in ihe summer. "}) Design a wood product or structure to allow for ihe inevitable swelling lhal lakes place during the summer. When installing a new wood floor, for example, leave plen ty of space around the perimeter. When fitting a dmr, allow space for swelling. 4) Avoid high levels of moisture in the home in the summer. Soil covers in the crawl space, air condi tioning or humidifiers will help re duce moisture levels. More information on moisture control is available from the exten sion office.
