Tall Fescue Grass Not Recommended In Area BY C. BRI CK WILLIAMS Area Extension Turfgravs Agent Dear Plant Doctor: 1 am consid ering using sonic of the new turf types of lull fescue in my yard. What arc some of the pros and cons of tall fescue? Answer: I have been waiting 10 years for this question. A portion of m\ graduate research involved the evaluation of tall fescue growth in the piedmont and coastal plains of Alabama. Tall fcscuc (Fcstuca arundina cca) is a cool season bunch grass native to northern Africa and the adjoining Mediterranean countries. Tins grass is grown extensively throughout the eastern United States, primarily in the piedmont and mountain regions. High loam or clay-containing soils usually pro duce quality turf stands. In general tall fescue docs poorly in sandy soils. Calls Answered Officers answered 1,163 calls last month and made 126 investigations while recovering more than S 16,000 in property, reported the Brunswick County Sheriff's Department. According to the monthly report, officers made one arrest on drunk and disruptive charges, logged 89,496 miles and used 5,853 gallons of fuel. Other figures lor October show: 102 domestic calls answered; 10 ar rests made as prosecuting witness; 405 witnesses summoned; 550 civil papers served; one juvenile petition served; 229 local warrants and three foreign warrants served; three men tal and inebriate papers served and seven doors and windows found open. Court hours totaled 335 hours on duly and seven hours off duty. Two trips were made out of the county, S16.150 in properly was recovered and the department's transport van logged 1.013 miles. Officers held 23 crime prevention meetings. 4 ROBIN'S ? SWEET SHOPPE Feature of the Week BOSTON CREAM PIE Open Tues -Sat 8-8 I Midway Piaza ? Hwy 179 ? Ocean isle 579-0578 THE PLANT DOCTOR The optimum seasons for the growth of tall fescue arc the spring and fall. During the hot, dry sum mer months the grass tends to go dormant. However, tall fescue comes closest to providing vcar round green lawn throughout much of North Carolina. Tall fescue docs not recover well from injury or fool traffic, therefore bare areas must be reseeded annu ally. Great ad vances have been made in breeding high turf-type fescue varieties past 15 years. Tall fescue is a >mi.i.iams modcraic-to-coarsc bladed, heavy duty grass thai tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Older varieties, such as Kentucky 31. are much coarser bladed than the newer turf-type tall fcscuc vari eties. Numerous varieties arc avail able, some of which arc Adventure, Brookston, Falcon, Finelawn, Gal way, Houndog, Jaguar, Olympic and Rebel II. Tall fescue sounds like the ideal lawn grass. But for eastern North Carolina gardeners, the reality is quite the opposite. I rarely sec a high quality tall fcs cuc lawn in ihis area doe to (he san dy soils thai dominate. Improper cultivation, nematodes and numer ous hoi weather fungus disease pro blems also help restrict tall fcscuc lawns to the piedmont and mountain regions of the stale. In general, I recommend lhal you consider one of the warm season grasses such as zoysia, centipede, bcrmuda or St. Augustine for your lawn. Tall fescue and other ctx>l season grasses such as benigrass, blucgrass and fine fescue can be grown in this area but at great trou ble and expense. The North Carolina Extension Service has several excellent publi cations that address tall fcscuc lawns. Carolina Lawns (Bulletin AG-69) and Tall Fcscuc Lawn Maintenance Calendar (Bulletin AG-367) are available from the county extension office at Bolivia.
