FISHING REPORT Anglers Pull In Speckled Trout BY DOUG RUTTER Fishermen hooked lots of speck led trout and king mackerel in waters ofT the South Brunswick Islands last week for the second week in a row. Trout were pulled from area rivers and streams and the Atlantic Inlracoastal Waterway, while most of the kings were caught about 20 miles offshore. "The fish are jumping in the boat," John Sheffield ol Sheffield's at Ocean Isle Beach said Monday. "They caught more speckled trout here than you can shake a stick at." Anglers caught trout in the canals at Ocean Isle, Saucepan Creek and Shalloue River. Sheffield said the trout apparently were drawn inshore to feed on shrimp in the waterway. "Even the people who don't usually fish for irout were catching them." Sheffield said people fishing off shore last week ran into king mack erel anywhere between 18 and 27 miles offshore. Most of the fish were small, he said, but anglers brought in kings over the weekend thai weighed 44 and 28 pounds. Tripp's Fishing Center Joyce Land of Tripp's Fishing Center at Shallottc Point said speck led trout and king mackerel arc the best things going right now for local fishermen. David Hobbs and Leo Todd, both of Shallottc Point, pulled in two flounder and 60 trout last week. Fishermen aboard the Sea Turtle caught their limit in kings Saturday. "Right now the speckled trout are doing real good and the spottailcd drum," Ms. Land said. "They're catching a few spots in the gill nets, but nothing on the hook and line."
