School.
West Pulls From Behind
To Keep Quiz Bowl Title
BY SUSAN USHER
West Brunswick High School
surged from behind Saturday after
noon to defeat South Brunswick
High School and retain the Bruns
wick County Qui/. Bowl Champion
ship for another year.
The Brunswick County Quiz
Bowl was held at Brunswick Com
munity College before an audience
of about 50 people. Teams from
North, South and West Brunswick
high schools competed.
South Brunswick High had de
feated North Brunswick 130-30 and
again 60-10 after losing to West 65
20 in double-elimination play.
But South defeated West Bruns
wick 55-45 in Game 4, forcing the
bowl into a higher-scoring fifth and
final match won by West 150-110.
West took home the rotating trophy,
while all three teams received Quiz
Bowl T-shirts.
West Brunswick's team will ad
vance to the 1991 District Quiz
Bowl March 23 in New Hanover
County. Sponsored by Jim Pricc,
school media specialist, the team
consists of John Cook, Rodrick
Gausc, Jeremy Hewett, Terry Na
wara, Phillip Rhodes, Ben Robin
son, Tim Palmer and Greg Ycagcr.
In Quiz Bowl competition stu
dents answer questions of varying
difficult about math, history, Eng
lish, science, literature, geography,
current events and languages. First
round questions arc worth 10
I
points; sccond-round questions, 20
points; and third-round questions,
30 points Teams can confer briefly
before one member answers a 30
point question; in other rounds,
teammates lake turns answering
questions individually.
In Saturday's opening game.
North and South missed the capital
of Tennessee (Nashville); the date
of elections in Haiti (Dec. 16); and
the new minimum wage that goes
into effect in 1991 ($4.25). Bui
teammates did know a gymnasium,
adenoids and a pcriixl as a cyclc in
physics.
Neither West nor South team
mates knew the location of the
Falklands, with West's respondent
suggesting off Chili and South's, off
Ireland. But West's players knew
the aardvark; South's, the United
Arab Emirates; and North, the
Whiskey Rebellion.
The names of Andrew Carnegie,
John Muir and Horace Mann were
unfamiliar, as were the works of
Keats and Cooper and the order
founded by St. Francis of Assisi
(Franciscan).
Neither South nor North's re
spondents knew "Catfish" Hunter's
hometown of Hertford or Knutc
Rocknc's alma mater of Notre
Dame or the number of gallons (42
U.S.) in a barrel of oil. Players also
didn't know about black ground
breakers Jackie Robinson in base
ball or Marion Anderson in opera.
They did know about such things
as the Rosetta Stone, the chcmical
make-up of nitrogen and that in
football, "QB" stands for quarter
back.
Competing for South Brunswick
High School, coached by Mabel
Calloway, were Teresa Butler, Ron
ald Brown, Santino McLaughlin,
John Midgcuc, Kyle Monday, An
thony Justice, Ritchie Truell and
Mike Wescott.
From North Brunswick High
School, sponsored by JoAnn Absi
and Fred Baldwin, were Traccy
Hamby, Traccy Henry, Tabbi King,
George Kcllcy, Tim Kelly, Gary
Martin, Susan Nance and Jim Ros
sitcr.
Quiz Bowl is sponsored by the
Brunsw ick County Library in coop
eration with the Brunswick County
Schools and with the support of the
Brunswick County Parks and Rec
reation Department and Brunswick
County and West Brunswick Branch
Friends of the Library. The bowl
was coordinated by Felecia Hardy
of the library staff.
Marybeth Bianchi, feature editor
of The State Port Pilot, served as
moderator. Judges were Bob Maker
and Louise Potcnte; Quiz Bowl au
thority was Doris Wilson. Nancy
Price assisted with rotation; Char
lotte Hart and Nancy Potcnte kept
score and Emma Myles kept time.
Matilda Suggs and Francis Wert/,
handled registration.
